"Famous people I almost met"

I met and shook hands with President (then) Carter and he addressed me by my name. I was flabbergasted and impressed that he knew my name…until a friend gently reminded me later that it was embroidered on my jacket…

“I came close to having a fatal car accident. I guess I almost met God?”

:)

have never seen this thread…after almost four years on CC…needs to be revived…!!

Steven Spielberg at a hotel in Arizona with his mom (so cute),

One of the Jonas brothers (Joe maybe?) at a mall in NJ shopping with his wife last week…

Jude Law on the streets of NY; literally waiting to cross the street right next to me…!

dstark, A waiter on a cruise last year told my husband he looked like Phil Jackson. He’s really tall with a beard but I personally think is better looking than Phil Jackson! (not that Phil is unattractive).
Saw Jessica Simpson in the women’s room at LAX but didn’t say anything to her. I think even celebrities deserve to be left alone in the bathroom!
Met Jimmy Stewart and have a picture of me sitting next to him in my house. He was very gracious (as was his wife Gloria).

sevmom…nice stuff…

“dstark, A waiter on a cruise last year told my husband he looked like Phil Jackson. He’s really tall with a beard but I personally think is better looking than Phil Jackson! (not that Phil is unattractive).”

Welll…whether your husband is better looking than Phil Jackson…if you think your husband is better looking…he is. :)

Jimmy Stewart was fantastic…and I doubt I will ever run into Jessica Simpson in a bathroom. Is Jessica Simpson really great looking in real life?

A guy I know said that Halle Berry is better looking in real life than in the pictures…and that is saying something.

I have some weird brushes with fame:

As I noted on the other thread, I once danced with Emilio Estevez at a nightclub back in the 80s. And I got to lay on a hospital bed that Harrison Ford had just been on (I was next in line, but I didn’t see him).

My daughter went to the 3rd birthday party of a classmate whose mom at the time was the makeup artist for Cindy Crawford.

One of my oldest friend’s first cousin is George Takei (Sulu on StarTrek).

I once drove the van that held the cameraman for a national news organization that was directly in front of Chuck and Di on a city visit.

Great thread!

On a morning run, saw a guy coming and knew he was from out of town because he was dressed in a matchy-matchy outfit (Nike hat, matching Nike shirt & jacket, matching Nike shorts). It was Will Farrell in town shooting a movie.

H sat near Sting (in town for a concert) having lunch on a Monday and he and I sat near Mel Gibson (shooting a movie nearby) having dinner the next Friday. Lucky week!

dstark, Jessica looked pretty normal, not particularly overly made up.
Remembering a couple of other things. Saw Corbin Bernsen on the streets of New York years ago. I had tickets to see Conan and Corbin ended up being one of the guests(which I didn’t know he would be at the time). My sister and I got seated in the first row at Conan somehow and Conan came out into the audience before the show and shook my hand. Amy Poehler (long before she was famous) was seated right behind me as one of those audience plants for a skit.
Touched Todd Rundgren’s arm 30 plus years ago when he jumped into the audience at a concert.
Saw Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith years ago when they were onhand for the opening of a club (I was just walking along the street and saw a big hubbub so stopped to see what was going on).It was one of those times when they had gotten back together briefly. I asked Don Johnson for an autograph and when he handed it back, I said, “Thank you so very much” and he looked right into my eyes and replied “You’re so very welcome.” I melted!

Having come from a family that has been involved in the theatre business for decades, I’ve met my share of famous actors and know many very well. As a result, I’m not one who gets starstruck but I have to admit that it was very exciting to meet Tom Hanks when introduced by a mutual friend. I’ve always admired him and it was fun to meet him. If you are in NYC, and do a lot of walking, particularly in the theatre district or the Village, you will always see famous people going about their daily routines. I have never once visited the city when I have not seen multiple famous people making their way to the subway, buying their latte at Starbucks, shopping for fruit at a bodega, going to see their friends in a Broadway show, etc. It’s the nature of the city.

One of my favorite famous people is Hillary Clinton. We have a couple of mutual friends and I’ve met her on several occasions. She’s delightful and a wonderful conversationalist.

My very favorite famous person, and one I’ve known for virtually his entire life, happens to be the best hockey player in the world! He’s a peach.

“My very favorite famous person, and one I’ve known for virtually his entire life, happens to be the best hockey player in the world!”

my daughter is going to be very jealous when I show her this thread…

For those of you 60-ish types, reach back deep into your memory banks and recall the bad old Watergate days and the aggressive news coverage, especially during 1974 and notably by CBS. Dan Rather was a rising star then, but so was one of his colleagues, David Dick (no jokes, please). David was in Miami covering the Cuban connection and I had a date with him. Later, I found out he was married–I was horrified as I was in my very early 20’s and that sort of thing never occurred to me. I turned down a second date!

In other famous connections: I lived around the corner from Cybill Shepherd in elementary school and we were both part of a neighborhood group of kids who played softball in someone’s yard. I went to high school with Kathy Bates and saw her in her first roles in our high school theater department productions, and I managed Dana Buchman’s (dress designer) student council campaign.

Well, doubt many of us can top alwaysamom on this. I know I sure as heck don’t run in those kinds of circles!
Husband and I were sitting at the bar at Sam Snead’s Tavern near The Homestead years ago. We were having a nice conversation with the older gentleman on the barstool next to us when it dawned on us that it was indeed Sam Snead that we were sitting next to!
Saw Justin Deas (from Guiding Light) and his wife Margaret Colin (Independence Day) on the Disney Wonder with their sons years ago.

Cool about Kathy Bates,dg5052, I like her new show,Harry’s Law.

Almost met Bob Hope and Olivia Newton-John, around 1980. I was in a long-distance relationship with a girl in L.A. area, her dad was a producer for NBC. He and his family went to dinner with those 2 the week before I got to go to Cali to see her. For him, it was just people he worked with… for me it would have been huge!

Cute story about Walter Payton, later.

Okay, if this were a competition, Alwaysamom gets to win. She doesn’t even have to brush…she gets the real thing!

Oh, wait, Alwaysamom is another brush for me! Now I can boast to my real life friends, “I know this virtual person named Alwaysamom, we’ve been on CC for years together! We’re like THIS (crossing fingers). Well, guess what!? SHE is personal friends with…”

Spent an entire afternoon with a famous rock star after meeting him on a business trip in 1985.

I was in a pub at around noon (just opened) planning on lunch and a quick last walk around London before boarding an evening flight home to NY. I was traveling with a male client (Tom) who was about 40ish at the time and had a teenaged son. I was about 26 or so and not into heavy metal.

Tom and I were the only ones at the pub until a guy dressed in a peacock blue leather jacket walked in. (Hard not to notice him.) Tom suddenly got up saying “I think I know who that is and if I’m right I want an autograph for my son…”

I was left sitting alone. After 5 minutes or so I got up to join Tom and see what was going on. I walked up and was introduced to OZZY OSBOURNE! He proceeded to ask us to sit down and join him for a drink/lunch. At first we were the only patrons still in the pub, but as the afternoon progressed it began to fill up.

Ozzy was bright, ARTICULATE and engaging. He was very into current events and probably knew more about American history and politics than most Americans. We sat for hours drinking and talking. People in the pub kept their distance, but would occassionally send a round of drinks to our table. Since neither Tom nor I were actually “fans”, we did not act like we were in awe of him. I think he appreciated that and it allowed us to actually talk to him on a real level. We discussed politics, terrorism, religion (including Judaism), his in-laws, his wife and growing family, his visit to the Betty Ford clinic (yes he was with us drinking…but had “kicked the hard stuff”, the up-coming Live Aid Concert in Philadelphia (it was the following weekend), life on the road, biting the head off of doves “its a business”, and mostly his passion for music.

The most unbelievable part of the whole day was when he turned to us and asked us to come to his rented house around the corner and listen to some music he had written and recorded. We walked into his kitchen and saw his daughter in a playpen (Kelly) with her Nanny. Sharon was upstairs very pregnant with their youngest son. He ran up to tell her that he “dragged some Americans home from the pub that he wanted her to meet.” She was not thrilled and never came down.

He then reached to play us a tape that was already in place in a boom box sitting above his refrigerator. It was a recording of standard-like songs that he had composed and recorded. He said, “this is the music I like…I grew up with this”…and that he would sell it to other artists under another name!

After listenign to the tape (which was excellent!) Ozzy walked us out, pointed us in the direction back to the pub and posed for some pictures. It was dusk and we had to race to our hotels to pick up our baggage to make our flights.

It was an unbelievable experience! And seriously, he was the nicest guy!

Just remembered-I went to graduate school with Jeff Goldblum’s mom,Shirley(who was pretty dramatic herself but in a good way-very nice lady and quite a bit older than most of the other students). Jeff was just starting out (had gotten that TV show with Ben Vereen and she was VERY proud of him). Jeff’s father was my dad’s doctor for years.
Great story,uskoolfish!
Got to go the White House a few years ago with my son’s team for the Little League(Tee Ball on the South Lawn). Ended up sitting directly behind the Bush’s and got autographs from both President and Laura Bush.Even though I’m not a Republican,it was still pretty cool.

I saw Terry O’Quinn (Locke from LOST) in the market on the North Shore of Oahu, twice, while on vacation.

Wow, sure can’t touch that Ozzy story!

Many years ago, while in the waiting room at DS’s first visit to the pediatrician, I saw a man enter with a woman and a newborn. He was dressed in spandex bicycle shorts and a white poet’s shirt. This was in a small town where the usual attire is more along the lines of green whales on pink trousers and Topsiders. It was Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.
