FAQ for USC Financial Aid

Back when we received financial aid (and even today in the ‘Financial Aid Summary’ page on OASIS), it said that my family would have to pay 5,000/year. However, in the Current Billing Balance page on OASIS, the balance stands at 11,000! This is after my Stafford Loan disbursement, so I was wondering if the Pell and Cal Grants have been disbursed already, because there is no way we can pay 11,000. I’m kind of freaking out because we have to have a plan figured out in a matter of days and I don’t understand why the balance is so high. Could it be because I’m living in a dorm and thats about 4,000? Because I distinctly remember asking if living on campus would affect the amount i had to pay and I remember I got several answers that said no.

Ahhhh.

Go to “Transactions” (in the bar across the top when you check your balance) and see what has been charged and what has been credited. Hopefully that will tell you what you need to know.

Thanks! I went in and didn’t see any Cal Grant or Pell Grant, thankfully.

Do you by any chance know when those are going to be disbursed?

Be sure to look at “page 2” as well. Cal Grant actually doesn’t disburse until late September from the California Student Aid Commission, but luckily USC will credit that amount in advance - if it isn’t there by about Thursday give Financial Aid a call.

How do you charge the season football tickets to usc epay bill? Does it take a while to be added to the bill? Thanks

I thought student season football tickets you pay directly to the box office and isn’t charged through the epay bill?

At least that’s how I’ve payed for them the last 2 years…

Yes, it does take a while for the charge to show up, and my kiddo din’t get a ticket this year (study abroad, so not at USC this semester) so I can’t tell you if hers has been charged - you might have to start a thread to ask that one.

As far as I know, the only way to pay for the student football ticket is with your student account. Maybe someone else has better info? (Football tickets are out of my financial aid knowledge  )

edit: ^See? I have no useful football-ticket info!!! Thanks, btbam91!

Update on my finaid status -
After being shocked by a decrease of around 10K from last year from my financial aid, I wrote everybody I could a lengthy email about the situation of my family. USC granted me with more generous grant and since I’m working my butt off during the summer, hopefully I won’t be in too much debt after college! Thanks SC! If I ever become rich, I’ll make sure to donate enough money to make a library with my name attached to it. HAhaha.

I even wrote financial aid office a nice thank you email. :)

But yeah, I don’t think SC lowers finaid tb… I had the least fin aid in my freshman year and the most aid my jr/senior year.

Good news, uyulove! Thanks for the update :)

Anyone know when we get the Pell Grant? I know we got the loans yesterday, but it didn’t mention anything about the grant.

^ It should be this week. Don’t worry about it today - just enjoy move-in. Thursday or Friday, if they aren’t showing up on your “Transactions,” call, email, or stroll into the Financial Aid office to ask.

alright, thanks
Moving in within the hour… this should be fun.

I paid my tuition yesterday morning and calculated with all of my financial aid this semester subtracted to the total cost of tuition, my pell grant had already been subtracted to my total balance. I remember hearing that we would need to get reimbursed by visiting the student services table during welcome week or something along those lines, however, both me and my friend had our pell grants already subtracted to our total cost of tuition. This may apply differently to those who have already paid tuition ahead of time, so I’m not quite sure; if anyone could clarify that would be great.

We can pay for the tuition in person, right? My parents are coming with me this afternoon to Annenberg’s Move In day and they were wondering if they could just drop by the cashier’s office and pay my tuition in cash?

Yes, you can pay in person. USC is remarkably accommodating when it comes to accepting payment  (Especially cash!)

Hey this is an update for post #509 on page 34…Despite missing deadlines, USC was great enough to put together a financial package that made it possible to attend

*I’m a spring admit, so these numbers are just the spring 2011 semester:

Work study 1,375
Grants 16,000
Federal Grants 1800

Sub. Loans 4,000
Unsub loans 1,000

EFC 4000

thanks for the advice all, and for future USC students and parents: please get that paper work in on time and save yourself the worry.

P.S. I’m still trying to sort out the financial eligibility and the whole meeting satisfactory academic progress + maximum terms and units.

VERY good advice! And I am glad to hear the package works for you - thanks for updating!

Are the USC grants only merit based? Or is it financial and merit together? I’m just wondering because I am a prospective transfer student and I heard the FA isnt as great for us.
Would a transfer student receive the same amount of aid/grants if they had the same EFC as a freshman?

Thanks!

It is the opposite - USC grants are only need-based. USC *scholarships *are merit based.

Start by reading the first two pages of this thread.

USC is one of the few universities that guarantee to meet 100% of USC-determined need for all undergraduates who submit complete, on-time financial aid applications - including transfers. BUT, that has nothing to do with your FAFSA EFC. USC calculates your need using the CSS/Profile, which considers assets such as home equity the FAFSA does not. So the amount you are expected to contribute at USC may be different than your FAFSA EFC.

Read those first two pages and if you have more questions - post them!

alamemom  - what kind of merit scholarships are available for transfers?
