What are financial aid options for a student seeking a second bachelor’s degree? Would USC be an unrealistic choice, financially speaking?

Thanks

Hey so I have a few questions…I’m sorry if you’ve answered these a million times already!

1) I completed my CSS Profile and FAFSA application online before the deadline. Under my financial aid documents on USConnect it says that I have no pending documents and no received documents? I’m extremely worried about this…is this normal?

2) What are all the required documents I have to submit? I know about the W-2’s and parent tax returns but is there anything else? and I want to fax in these documents and don’t know where to find the cover sheets on my portal…can you tell me specifically where to find them?

Thanks!

Im asking for a friend who have appealed for financial aid. Will USC notify him even if they reject his appeal?

herpdyderp - Wow! You are really on top of things. To be honest, I can’t really remember the MPN timetable (you only do it once, and it works for all four years), but you have plenty of time before the semester begins - I am sure you will get it before then. Have you logged back in to see if it is available?

boober - I am not sure how USC handles it specifically, but in general financial aid for a 2nd bachelor’s is similar to financial aid in graduate school - loans. Federal aid and Cal Grants are not available for a 2nd bachelor’s. Let us know what you find out.

jgirl06 -

2) There should be a tab behind the first one called something like “Document Library.” It may not be available until you link your social security number. In the meantime, you can FAX your documents to financial aid with your own cover sheet. Include your name, USC ID# and social security number. The FAX # for financial aid is on page 1 of this thread.

superdoo1 Yes, from what I have observed on the forum those who appeal financial aid find out either way.

Good luck!

Thanks for the follow up Alamemom. Sorry for the slow reply - you know, finals and all that.

I called FAO and the person that I spoke to wasn’t sure whether they would automatically include the entire unsub amount in the package. She put me on hold to ask someone who said that they probably would, but I am holding out hope. I won’t be complaining either way. I’d work two jobs in a heartbeat to go to SC.

I’ll update the thread when I get my finaid award so you know the outcome.

Fight On!

We filed for an extension to do our taxes. The college told us they need signed copies of our 1040 forms. Can we send in an estimated 1040 form so they can proceed with the FAFSA process?

You can try, but from my observations here you will not receive a package that includes USC grants until you have provided signed copies of parent and student tax returns for 2010. If you are dependent on financial aid to attend USC, it would be a good idea to file your taxes soon.

Without the tax returns, you are eligible for a $5,500 Stafford loan for freshman year.

alamemom,

I recently got accepted to USC as a transfer student. I called the Financial Aid Office to make sure they’ve received my requested documents (which includes Income and Expense Declaration). I am not sure why this document was requested, but the FAO lady told me that it usually lowers the EFC calculation.

Over the phone, she had told me my FAFSA EFC was ~$25k, and they have made preliminary estimates of my USC EFC ~$50k. As I read on page 1 of this thread, I calculated the cap of just under ~$16k, which would be added onto my FAFSA EFC (total EFC ~$41k. Other than assets (which I’m guessing should be 0 if my parents have none other than our home), where would the $50k come from?

Now, I know that we all shouldn’t be worried if we haven’t received our final award packages. My awards aren’t even ready to be shown to me through USConnect. Are these “preliminary estimates of a USC EFC ~$50k” just really rough estimates, which most likely be HIGHER than my final package? I am not sure what to estimate right now, and the reason I called over the telephone was to see if they could give me any estimates so that I may seek private loan options and determine a budget for off-campus housing.

Last, are all students eligible for the $2,500 subsidized Stafford loan? And would a Parent PLUS loan be more affordable in the long-run versus a private loan (Sallie Mae)?

Thank you for all your help! It is greatly appreciated. I’ve been following the USC threads for 2 years and I’ve finally gained admission! The only thing that may stop me is the price, unfortunately.

Dumb question…jhow do i accept my financial aid? I dont see a button or anything to do it anywhere on the site

hey guys, I’m a transfer student and I have an EFC of 0 and received 38k in pell grant/university grant. I was expecting 48kish, but I noticed that my cal grant isn’t included yet because I need to submit a form. Will the 11k that CAL grant gives me reduce my USC grant or will that add on?

You don’t. If it’s OK and you don’t need to appeal…just show up to school! If it doesn’t cover the full balance, you will get an email letting you know when your first payment is due.

From my experience, the Cal Grant was always separate from the USC grant and was just added on. The Cal grant system is slow and doesn’t post as quickly as USC’s own awards. But, this could be different now? If I’m wrong, someone correct me.

Hey alamemom! Can you give estimates of USC efc if I tell you my fafsa efc+home equity? Just got accepted and Im so nervous about FA!
Thanks for all your help!

Nevermind my previous post. Just got my financial aid package and its awesome!!! Even with my parents’ high home equity our EFC is really low.

Btw, I wrote that I would be living in non USC housing, but I might end up living at home. Would that change my EFC? There would still be the gas expenses since I live really far.
Thanks!

Is there anyone who is committing with a rather high EFC as in an EFC>$35,000?
Do you believe it is a school worth the cost, more specifically if one got into the business program?

USC does have a significant # of full-pay students, so obviously there are quite a few who believe it is worth the significant cost of attendance. Whether it is worth the cost for YOU or any individual depends on alternatives and what the student plans to do with the oppportunities presented at USC vs. other Us.

Good luck–it is important for each student & family to decide what will work best for them. Importantly, remember the crushing debt will have a long term burdening effect for MANY years to whomever is assuming said debt.

Do we still have a few more weeks before returning students get their financial aid packages? It looks like last year things were starting to show up right at the beginning of June.

oh my god USC just gave me the most amazing financial aid package ever! I am officially in love with their financial aid office.

hey alamemom
I have a question. This is pretty specific, and I’m definitely going to have to contact the financial aid office but I thought I’d ask you first… I’m (as you know) from a very low-income household and I qualify for almost full federal aid. My pell grant and SEOG were both pretty high, but for some reason USC didn’t give me the Academic Competitiveness Grant (which I DEFINITELY qualify for). I thought it was strange because even NYU gave me that one last year. Since it’s federal aid and I do qualify, do they have to give it to me? Or is it their decision?

My daughter’s aide and scholarships for her sophomore year are the same as for her freshman year. We are very happy and she loved her first year at USC. It is an amazing school!

Thanks for all the info. I don’t know much about a private student loan. Are there some other ways to get a bigger loan for a freshman?
