FAQ for USC Financial Aid

btw how did you find out that’s the new policy? did they say that?

Mik194 - the financial aid office had instructed me to call if I hadn’t heard back within 2 weeks with the results of our appeal. When I called yesterday, 2 weeks to the day, two different aid officers said the same thing: new policy, please cool your heels another 2-3 weeks.

Seriously? So we’re not hearing back until school starts? Great…

Anybody know how you can convert work-study into loans?

SDTash23, as a sophomore you are eligible for $4,500 in Stafford subs + $2,000 in Stafford unsubs. If you have already accepted the full amount of your Stafford loans, your parents can request additional loans in Parent Plus loans. If they are turned down for the Parent Plus loans (not suggesting they would be, just providing information) then you become eligible for an additional $4,000 Stafford unsubs.

If you prefer not to use the work/study, simply do not apply for jobs.

I strongly suggest you accept the work/study. It is money in your pocket that does not impact the following year’s financial aid. In addition, studies have shown that college students who maintain 10 to 15 hours of employment per week get better grades than students who do not work.

Good luck.

Must be very new policy , as I called when we saw new grant on July 3rd , they told ne to upload or fax appeal over 4th July weekend as they were going to start working on them on the 8th July. Person I spoke to was a very authorative sounding older gentleman not a student helper or anything.
Oh well at least everything is in

Still havent gotten my aid/appeal -_-

^ Same. Unable to sustain my constant state of panic 3 weeks after submitting the appeal, I am now simply riding the waves of free-floating anxiety.

Hey did you move your enrollment commitment deposit @snowdog? Because everytime i called they gave me a different answer. But they said it’d be automatically moved if youre appealing your decision

@Mik194 no the deposit doesn’t apply in my case as my student is a sophomore who attended USC last year.

Has anybody heard back yet from their appeal? Or from their specific departments regarding school-specific scholarships (i.e. Marshall Continuing Students Scholarship)

^ No, and the fall bills are up on Oasis. It certainly is stressful looking at that very large bill and wondering if and when our appeal may be resolved.

Will I get more financial aid if my brother is going to Jr. College? What if he is taking less than 12 units?

So, my FAFSA EFC is $13,176 and USC says I should pay $17,683 for a single semester (including the loans in that one). Does that mean they expect me to pay double that a year? (I was admitted for Spring 2014)

I have no idea what would add over 20 thousand to my EFC that was on the CSS profile and not the FAFSA.

Its too late to edit, but I do understand the difference between the FAFSA and the CSS profile and how USC uses their own formula. I do not qualify for the simple needs test, as far as I am aware, so the only real difference between the things reported on the FAFSA and CSS is home equity, which I would not expect to add 20k by itself.

Marty - you should call to verify your situation but in my experience, yes, it means that the both the university grants and the family contribution will be double for the full year what they were for one semester.

When are we allowed to accept our loans so it can be credited to our bill?

I had an outside scholarship which reduced my university grant. I tried increasing my cost of attendance with transportation expenses and laptop expenses, but my grant was not restored. It simply just increased my contribution. Is there any hope now? Should I call and ask them to restore it?

Hi everyone,

I apologize in advance if what I am about to ask has already been answered. I would just really like someone to give me a quick answer on what I am supposed to do after I’ve gotten my USC Awards thing and finished entrance counseling on studentloans.gov.

I’ve emailed the USC financial aid office but they still haven’t responded. I will call them up soon but I’m currently out of the country right now.

Sorry, I’m just a bit worried.

What do I do now? After completing entrance counseling on studentloans.gov? Could someone refer to me a topic that has like a list of things I need to do before I attend orientation?

Thanks,

Bill

Call them. We did on Friday and it set my mind at ease. D has to fill out a form on her USC online page, and then complete the remaining documents on studentloans.gov. Call financial aid and have someone walk you through the procedure. We’ll do ours tomorrow but having another in college, you may have completed all the steps you need to.

emails can get lost, phone calls are more immediate - good luck!

Has anyone received a formal response yet to an EFC appeal for 2013-2014?
