How much is the PPV?
I’m not surprised he didn’t change. Jerry wore the same t-shirt forever.

The Santa Clara webcasts are $19.95 each. The 3 Chicago webcasts this weekend are $29.95 each or all three for $80. The webcasts are archived for repeat viewing until Aug 7 (I watched most of Sunday’s first set again tonight)
The cable pay per view for each Chicago show is $29.95 (standard def) or $39.95 (high def). I think that’s just view one time. There are multiple repeat airings and I’m counting on being able to DVR one. I’ll probably buy the final night for the big screen. I haven’t decided if I’ll webcast all the Chicago shows or listen to them on Sirius and record the best one on the DVR. We’ll see…
I enjoyed the two shows this weekend so much I’ll probably end up watching all three of the Chicago shows.
Thanks, I’m too cheap to do that. I’ll just watch after on YouTube.
The way I figure it. For the price of a lousy seat in a football stadium for one show, I can watch all five shows in the comfort of my own home, in a comfy chair, with my own beverage, with great video and audio. I pulled the plug on huge outdoor concerts after Watkins Glen (Dead, Allman Bros, The Band) in 1974. Life is too short for concerts in arenas that seat 50,000+…
Not to mention, I don’t live near Chicago or Santa Clara…
I do figure that most of the songs will make their way to YouTube after the run and the Dead will get tired of yanking them down. Since they have the video, they will surely end up for sale on Blu-Ray, iTunes, and Amazon Instant Video. The expense is the production and that’s already sunk cost.
I was at Watkins Glen, too!
We don’t go to any big concerts anymore, but try to get to a few shows at SPAC or Tanglewood over the summer and we only get lawn seats.
I’m another long-time Deadhead…grew up in SF and saw a tremendous number of shows over many years. I went last night and had a great time… So much fun to be back in that world for one more night. It certainly felt like they all were happy to be back out there together…especially Phil who had a smile on his face all night. Though I’ve never paid much attention to Phish, Trey Anastasio was definitely up to the challenge of channeling Jerry…
I just told H about this thread. He is a Deadhead and he happened to be playing his guitar. So I am now getting a Dead concert!
I didn’t really go into these shows with the expectation of Jerry Garcia Grateful Dead, He’s gone, and nothing’s gonna bring him back (as they say).
I figured that it would be Phil Lesh and Friends with Trey (which is pretty good), then add in Bob Weir, the Dead’s drummers, and Bruce Hornsby. Hard to complain about that group playing good songs…
You got to see a very special show. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house for the Brokedown Palace encore. Looked like both Phil Lesh and Trey were tearing up.
Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul
Yup, you’re right about Brokedown Palace…All of the core four were great as well as Hornsby et al. I wasn’t sure I wanted to go as I thought it might be too hard to see them without Jerry, but very very glad I did. Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile…
I saw Furthur (spinoff band) for their last concert. Fantastic! Only saw the Dead a few times. Such a great band- if you are not there live, you may not really “get it” about their songs- most of the songs spark memories from the live experience.
The Chicago show live album is already selling in pre-order in advance of its November 20, 2015 release date. http://www.dead.net
They’ve also got Blu-Rays and DVDs of the Chicago shows listed for presale. CD and Video discs in a set.
For me, the Grateful Dead clicked listening to Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty. Two masterpiece albums of Americana songwriting. Then, seeing them live, was a completely different experience with all the dance rhythms. After all the big stadium shows, I got to see them on three tours in the late 70s at the small Fox Theater in Atlanta, shows where they sometimes opened with acoustic sets and had started in on Jerry’s slow tempo renditions.
I think they were smart to wait 20 years to do these shows and then to only do them once. I knew they would be good because, on a good night, Phil Lesh and Friends has been as good a rock band as I’ve ever heard. There was no reason this band shouldn’t be very good.
The surprise has been Trey. I expected him to be capable on vocals, adequate on guitar, and a positive fun force. I did not expect him to grab the band by the scruff of the neck on guitar like he did in Sunday night’s show. I didn’t know he was that good.
They should let Hornsby sing more songs. He’s probably the best singer on stage. Does great with the Garcia songs. There are many more of those to come. Loser was excellent last night.
Phish is a force of nature in its own right. More than “adequate”. Of course Trey is up to it!
I’ve never been very impressed with Phish. Probably my fault. I haven’t given them much of chance. The material always seemed weak, but it’s unfair comparing to the gold standard of jamband songbooks.
I’m mostly familiar with Trey as a sometimes member of Phil Lesh and Friends. I’ve always been impressed with him as a lead singer front man in those groups, but he’s always been overshadowed by the other guitarists. Not bad, just overshadowed. The other guy in those ensembles, Larry Campbell, is one of the best guitarists I’ve ever heard.
Here’s Campbell chicken pickin’ a Telecaster trading licks with jazz guitarist John Scofield in a Phil Lesh & Friends Cumberland Blues jam. This is as good a band as I’ve ever heard, especially with Joan Osborne singing.

Same Bonnaroo set. Not Fade Away. Not many people can play guitar like that.

Campbell toured with Dylan for about 10 years

Trey’s been terrific in the two Dead shows so far, better for the second show than the first where he seemed to be laying back a bit.
Mathmom, I like plenty of stuff! Just not the Dead, that’s all. And while we are on classic rock, I don’t like Jimi Hendrix. Doesn’t mean I’m saying they aren’t talented or that you shouldn’t like them either. To each his own!!
No just curious - I didn’t think you were saying they were untalented. I just think they are hard to actively dislike - I can totally understand thinking they are boring. I can see not liking Jimi Hendrix if you don’t like the Dead.
Ha - I just talked to my sister. She is “abandoning” her suburban mother life temporarily to attend all 3 days of the Grateful Dead here in Chicago. I think attending the GD concert is like what attending a Paul McCartney concert is to me - a religious experience
I had a friend who is a Grateful Dead fan, I listened to the music, I didn’t like it but I do like Jimi Hendrix. But this thread reminds me to get my husband these concerts to see if he likes them. I have free Amazon gift card from my credit card rewards.
"I went last night and had a great time… "
@anxiousmom1, you know @dstark called you elderly.
Niece couldn’t go (which is why she was asking on FB if anyone needed a ticket - I just assumed she had extras.) But her BF went and he said it was great.
PG, I am very jealous of your sister.
Another YouTube rip from the Saturday webcast.
Uncle John’s Band (2nd song of the first set, after Truckin’). All of these have a high-def full screen option in YouTube.
