Fashionistas! Help needed!

What a great friend! Can we rename you Stacy??

Job well done, fireandrain. It must have been so gratifying to witness both your friend’s pleasure and her transformation.

Fabulous!!! I hope your friend goes home and tosses her old clothes! Personal shopper & you did a great job. I bet she looks years younger in her new clothes, too.

Thrilled she bought skinny jeans!

I hope she will spring for at least some new shoes as her new clothes will just not look as good on her if she pairs them with old beat up shoes.

I would volunteer to do the shoe piece :-).

Can I come, too? !!!

I’m a fan of Hugo Boss as well, and get this brand for my husband and son. The fit is amazing. I don’t wear suits for my work, but if I did, a HB suit would be in my closet.

She needs shoes…ASAP.

Thank you fireandrain for the lovely diversion. This thread has been a wonderful change of pace from the amusing and at times absurd obsession with the Ivy league that tends to dominate this site (and yes I am an Ivy alum so my comment is not due to envy.)

You know, guys, I think whenever I’m feeling depressed about something I’m going to reread this thread. You’re all saying such nice things about me. I’m actually building up the courage to start a thread about one of my insecurities, and one of the things stopping me is that I know that some people say some pretty nasty things here, even when someone is obviously vulnerable.

Put be kind to me in the title. I think it will work.

Or block the naysayers

Shifting gears for a moment: while I have all your attention and I don’t feel like starting a new thread – my husband needs a new suit. He wants to pay about $300, this may very well be the last suit he ever buys, and he wears a suit about 10 times a year. Should we just go to Nordstroms? Any other recommendations? (Last suit purchase was at least 10 years ago.)

On a tighter budget, Mens Warehouse might be an option.

Joseph A Banks has sales every so often. You might be able to get something there within the $300 price point.

Men’s Warehouse is a good option, and they do have tailors there…but not as fine as Nordstorm. But then, you have tons of sizes and styles from which to choose so your husband may find something that only needs the length hemmed.

In my opinion, you would need to hit a really good sale to do this at Nordtrom.

If your husband is a size that doesn’t need alterations, try Nordstrom Rack.

I recently took my son into Men’s Warehouse to be measured so when they have a sale I can get him a suit and a tux on sale- he’s a musician and needs a tux going forward. They recently acquired Joseph Abboud and they have a fairly wide range of brands. It seems that when Joseph Banks has a sale it is usually buy one get 2 free- great if you need more than one suit, but not so much if you just need one.

Our Rack has a seamstress and provides alterations, but not for free. There are nice Hugo Boss suits on sale at the ongoing Nordstrom’s Anniversary sale, but they would set you back $500.

Sometimes Joseph A Banks has buy one get two free…on separates. So you buy one suit jacket, and two pairs of slacks are “free”.

But to be fair…I think their service is not terrific. I like Men’s Warehouse much better.

Brooks Brothers outlet usually has good service and their suits are reasonably priced. I imagine they have in house tailors but have never seen one.

Yes, BB has in-house tailors. Often of that old-school European type for whom being a tailor isn’t a job, it’s a calling.

^^I have to agree with Thumper. I have bought suits for my three men (H & two S’s) over the years. My older S graduated college in May and need some really nice men’s trousers, shirts, ties and shoes for his first job post college. We went to both Joseph A. Banks and Men’s Warehouse. Where we live, at least, the salesmen at the Men’s Warehouse were much more attentive and more skilled/experienced. However we ended up buying about half from one store and half from the other. They say that Joseph A. Banks just merged with Men’s Warehouse on the corporate level but they are leaving their stores alone. If possible, if you could increase your budget just a little, by about $100, you will see better quality choices. However since he doesn’t wear a suit everyday, you will probably be okay.

Macy’s has men’s suits that are sometimes nicely priced, especially if you catch a sale and can use your coupons. Our S had some bespoke custom tailored suits made in LA. I’m not quite sure how much he paid for each suit. If you’re interested, PM me and I can ask him. He encouraged H to consider it, even though H probably only wears suits a few year, or less. I believe the suits S got were about $500 apiece (so slightly above your price point), but I’m not positive. If you have custom suits made, you can also get an extra pair of slacks made. S is a tough size to find with a 27/28" waist, so he’d have to have so many alterations he figured he might as well have the suit tailored from the beginning.
