Fastest-Growing Ethnic Category at Great Colleges: "Race Unknown"

you could just not put your race down on your application. but yes, it is extremely unfair that there is discrimination against anyone of a particular race, while there is extreme favoring of another (ie hispanics)

How is “I do homework for 2 hours a night” rarely studying? Real Asians don’t do homework nor do they study for school.

homework = studying?

studying = extra non-homework stuff, doesn’t it?

I HATE MYSELF!!!

While I don’t deny that there are certain biases against Asian candidates, the benefits legacies and athletes receive are much more outrageous than the benefits any URM may receive

umm…ok???

Take heart: you’re male. The bar just got kicked down a notch, and two at LACs.

putting down “other” is not acceptable for a lot a people like me who have asian sounding last names. Even if we check that off, colleges will still look at my last name and go, she’s asian.

I’m pretty sure your name will give away your ethnicity, even if you put “race unknown.”

You could always go desperate and change your last name.

Life’s not fair, get over it.

You’re chances aren’t hugely lowered. I could say the same thing because I’m female and there’s more competition.

If you really truly care, apply to a state school with no AA.

OK, if you took the time to actually click the link that I provided and not just read the title, then you would see that every one of the trillion or so affirmative action threads has been merged into that one thread.

Unless you have a distinctly un-korean last name, you probably did the right thing. An Asian who put down other could only look worse than an Asian who put down Asian…

Oh, and another, I know several people with the last name Lee who aren’t Asian. (Hello, Robert E.)

This wouldn’t apply to that many people… you’d need

a kid with an ambiguous last name

BOTH parents with ambiguous last names

Parents with legal non-Asian first names

the kid can’t be an immigrant or have foreign citizenship from an Asian country

the kid must have a legal non-Asian first name

Plus, even if it did… if peoples’ last names are going to become a factor in admissions… then you know the system is messed up

Well in my case, my last name sounds incredibly caucasian (even though I’m asian). 100% of the time, people think I must be Irish. Colleges do not try and interpret anyone’s last name as one ethnicity or another. If they did, they would obviously mislabel a LOT of individuals.

Maybe. But this gave me an impression that they would.

May I point out that the OP’s username is Johnlee24?

But I very much agree with your last comment, somedumbnoob (??)

edit: I mean this one: Plus, even if it did… if peoples’ last names are going to become a factor in admissions… then you know the system is messed up

That’s debatable; Lee is a racially ambiguous surname, is it not?
