I say go for it. If you like it, you will know what flavors your family will like best, and you get to enjoy it twice.
And if you don’t, you can spare your family and blame this untrustworthy poster on CC…

Guaranteed to sound strange, but a dear friend makes her own using Welche’s grape jelly, canned tomato sauce, fresh garlic, fresh ginger and cayenne. The first time I saw her make it I thought no way, that’s crazy! Then I tasted it on her baked chicken! Oh my! I actually don’t know the recipe, but I feel like the internet has it somewhere!
It’s really easy to make a ENC BBQ sauce and maybe someone mentioned it but Lexington is NOT Eastern North Carolina BBQ. If you want a brand ENC sauce you can try Scott’s https://www.scottsbarbecuesauce.com/the-sauce/
@Dolemite , I have a bottle of Scott’s in the pantry. Sauer’s is our favorite(also vinegary), but we also like Scott’s and I pick up Scott’s occasionally if I end up shopping at a store that doesn’t carry Sauer’s.
I give up. Lol. I’m going to do my own taste testing, some purchases (I’ve got Scott’s in the Cart) and some I make from promising online recipes. During covid, I’m not making sourdough, this’ll be my next thing.
So much of the ingredients seems the same base, more of this or that.
I do get that we all have our own prefs. I’m not into molasses or smokey. But I won’t turn down any good bbq.
About grape jelly. It plays a big role in the sauce for potluck meatballs, pretty evenly split between the jelly and cocktail sauce. A potluck hit. Surprising.
Stubbs should be thankful for this thread. I just bought more Smokey Mesquite and the ribs to go with it. Before shopping we asked FIL if there’s anything he wanted for meals, suggesting steak or burgers, etc. He replied with, “More of those ribs would be good, otherwise, whatever you want.”
So, we now have “more of those ribs” and will be getting them marinating shortly! They’ll probably be Friday’s supper.
@lookingforward You might like this sauce from Dinosaur’s https://dinobbq.securetree.com/Retail/Wango-Tango-Habanero-Hot-BBQ-Sauce/
Here’s a link to Arthur Bryant’s original sauce. It’s vinegar based. They sell another one which is sweet. https://www.bbq-authority.com/Arthur-Bryant-s-Original-BBQ-Sauce-p/AR00100.htm
