Big board game fan here… and lucky that my kids also loved board games. For me growing up Candyland, Chutes & Ladders,Uncle Wiggly, Scrabble, Monopoly, Racko, Parcheesi and Clue. When I first met DH, we played a lot of backgammon and just relearned how to play. With my kids they were introduced early on and loved Candyland along with Kosherland (the Kosher version of Candyland that was given to older d when she was 2 weeks old for her first Hanukkah and lived on for many years as a game that got played in our house), Chutes & Ladders, a game called Crackers in my Bed, Kids on Stage, Uncle Wiggly and then as they got older Parcheesi, Scrabble, Racko (never liked it as much as me) Clue, Scattergories and now Bananagrams.

Hmm…Shenanigans sounds familiar…

Omg, yes Hi Ho Cherry-o!!! We played that a million times! And I swear my kids learned to spell from Boggle Jr.

Another game still fun to play - Payday

Two favorites in our family: Castle Risk (a really hard-to-find variant of Risk and so much fun) and Samba (a three-deck variant of Canasta). Castle Risk can take forever as noted upthread about regular Risk, and brings out the hdden aggressive instincts in different ways among our family members, in a fun and harmlessly entertaining way. If played traditionally, Samba is a 10.000 point game, so that can be a lengthy undertaking also.

I find it really interesting how personality types and quirks can manifest in playing games, and how in an intimate setting among family members or a group that knows each other well, that affects the game…

Our family played all the cheesy board games and my personal favorite was $20,000 Pyramid (later $100,000 Pyramid :-).

We also played Rook (card game). The kids & I still play Phase 10. I’ve always wanted to learn Bridge, but I don’t think anyone plays anymore. Doesn’t seem like it would be as much fun with a computer.

My favorite games as a kid were:
Mouse Trap, Mille Bornes, Pit, Rich Uncle, Operation, Clue, and every type of Rummy, Pinochle and War. And the most annoying game for all parents…
POP-O-MATIC TROUBLE!
“Pop o matic, pop the dice,
Pop a six and you move twice,
Race your friends around the track,
And try to move the others back.
That’s popomatic Trouble.”
My D had this musical game called Penguin Shuffle and the music still haunts me!

Has anyone else heard of the game Panic? I had it as a child and have never seen another. It had a box contraption into which you put your tokens, called “troubles.” If you rolled a certain number, you had to push one of the six buttons on the box, and if you were unlucky enough to open the box you got your troubles back. The box would be reset after opening so you never knew which button would open it. The winner was the one to successfully get rid of his/her troubles. Such a fun game!!!

Ah, I remember now- we have been playing Dominion with eldest dd and her husband. I like it better than Settlers of Cataan; but I enjoy cranium the most-especially after several glasses of wine. I have learned that I can’t hum very well.

We are also a big board game family. Some of our favorites include Sequence, Mille Bornes, Flinch, Apples to Apples.

I love Quelf! Most everyone thinks it sounds stupid and then they have a great time when they actually play.

Just gave S the Settlers of Cataan game and played for first time. I can see how it would grow on you.

I always try to get my younger brother’s wife on my team if we play Cranium. She’s the only one who can hum worth beans. Even then, we still our lousy at guessing hums. I’m super duper good at drawing with my eyes closed. :D

@nottelling: you can learn chess right now! :)

Shenanigans! Stubby Kaye was the host and the contestants had to walk through a series of challlenges - the only one I can remember is the “sword of Damocles.” Was that local to NYC? There was a board game, too. I only remember it was too hard for me to play…I’m afraid to Google it and find out how long ago that was!

Edit: Gave in to my curiosity and looked it up: '64-65 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenanigans_(television)

Risk type games that I make. I just got Here I Stand board game for Christmas. You more historical the better

As a little kid, Candyland; it seemed so magical. As an older kid, parcheesi and Life. In college, I switched to card games: hearts, pinochle and cribbage. Early adulthood, backgammon. Now, D is gone and DH isn’t a game-player, so I play solitary games, sudoku (is that a game?) and online mah jong.

At my parents’ Assisted Living, they play Mexican Train which everyone seems to love. Maybe that’s my future. :)

No one has mentioned Battleship!
When I was growing up, my family used to play backgammon at poolside. I haven’t played that in years.

Anyone heard of “Go For Broke” ? The first person to LOSE all your money wins. Really fun as a kid. We also (still have) the “Stock Market” game. You buy and sell stocks as you go around the board as prices rise and fall.

Sorry … the rainbow variation: Each player gets markers of all four colors! Pull this on your kids as a prank!

Borderline: The best game for your little one that loves geography and is learning the states.

Save the Whales: cooperative game with beautiful game pieces, from Animal Town Game Co.

played axis and allies over the holidays with my family, although it has a deep strategy and lots of rules

backgammon-oldest game, and still one of the best

monopoly and risk

One of our family’s favorite card games is Fluxx–really fun because the rules keep changing and you can never predict who’s going to win (a great way of helping my Asperger’s daughter deal with unpredictability!). For Christmas, I gave my son the Zombie version of the game, which was even more unpredictable. We also really like both Uno and Uno Attack!

Big board game enthusiasts around here…

Scrabble is a perennial favorite and I loved Clue as a kid.

S hosts regular board game nights with his GF. Current favorite is Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan.

When we were growing up: Yahtzee, Monopoly, Sorry!, and lots of cards - Kings in the Corners, Crazy Eights, War, Slap Jack, Spoons.

When our kids were growing up: Yahtzee, Pok
