Of course you can vote, Nrdsb4! In many Equity tours, you will find actors who have Broadway experience, sometimes in the same show.
@alwaysamom ā I didnāt know there was a musical based on the The Wild Party!
āQueenie was a blonde and her age stood still/ she danced twice a day in vaudevilleā
That Wild Party???
How did I miss it!!
Love the Art Spiegelman illustrated edition:

I love musicals and picking favorites is very difficult since I have enjoyed most musicals I have seen. I guess off the top of my head as big faves would be:
A Chorus Line
RENT
Hair
Ragtime
Book of Mormon
Gypsy
Cabaret
In the Heights
Once
(plus any show my daughter is in, LOL)
I also enjoy classics like West Side Story, Sound of Music (my favorite as a kid), etc. But I also really like many contemporary newer shows. One thing that amazes me about Broadway is the huge variety of shows that appear there and the enormous creativity that goes into them.
While my girls grew up in Vermont, they were very fortunate to see countless shows on Broadway, as well as on tour, and both sets of grandparents took them to a bunch in their youth, but we did too. Both of my kids have seen a great deal of theater. My younger one has seen an incredible amount because she has been living in NYC for nearly 10 years and her life is the theater (she is now a professional singer/actor in theater and also writes/composes musicals). Some mentioned Fun Home and Hamilton and my D saw Fun Home both Off Broadway and on Broadway and has seen Hamilton too. I want to see both and would really like to see Beautiful as well. I just saw a show in London this past week.
Yes, indeed, that Wild Party! In fact, there are two musicals based on it. One by John Michael LaChiusa (the better of the two in my opinion) and one by Andrew Lippa. They were on stage at the same time in 2000, one on Broadway and one off. As you might imagine if youāre familiar with the source material, it is a show that isnāt everyoneās cup of tea, but I love it.
It is impossible to narrow it down. ( Do not know how I did)
As I read this thread tonight I kept thinking " Oh yeah I love that one too." And I think of some of the folks Iāve seen in plays such as Audra McDonald in Ragtime and Jerry Orbach in 42nd Street.
Also love Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Phantom of the Opera
Annie
Iāve only seen the movie versions, but I adore The Sound of Music and Camelot.
Jesus Christ Superstar
Some of you might enjoy this New York article - itās from 2011, so doesnāt consider musicals created since then. http://nymag.com/news/features/greatest-new-york/70476/ Five professionals who are passionate about musicals, including director George C. Wolfe, critic Frank Rich, and the late Nora Ephron try to reach a consensus on the 10 greatest American musicals of all time. Itās a great discussion! They wind up with a 3-way tie for first place: Guys and Dolls, Gypsy, and Sweeney Todd. Those are followed, in order, by The King and I; West Side Story; and a 5-way tie between Carousel, Porgy and Bess, Showboat, A Chorus Line, and Sunday in the Park with George.
My favorites are A Little Night Music, Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, and 1776. The first Broadway show I ever saw was Promises, Promises with Jerry Ohrbach. He was so completely wonderful in that show that I fell in love with him, and to this day canāt turn off an L & O episode if heās in it.
I began going to Broadway shows when I was in middle school with my family⦠the days of Carol Channing in Hello Dolly, Man of La Mancha and Fiddler (after Zero Mostel had left the show) so those three will also resonate strongly with me. Other shows I saw back in the day were Pippin with Ben Vereen, Pirates of Penzance with Linda Ronstadt, A Chorus Line and Grease, Hair, Promises, Promises, Dancin, Woman of the Year with Lauren Bacall, revival of The King & I with Yul Brynner, followed later by Les Miserables(have seen it on Broadway at least 3x), Chicago, revival of Fiddler on the Roof, . When my kids were young we took them to see Cats (we all hated it-couldnāt below what a major hit this was), 1776 revival, Annie Get Your Gun with Bernadette Peters, 42nd Street, Kiss Me Kate, revival of Les Miserable, Rent, Cabaret the first revival with Alan Cummings, summer stock productions of Grease, Carousel, Sweeney Todd, Brigadoon, On The Town. We were so disappointed as we had tickets for the revival of Once Upon a Mattress with Sarah Jessica Parker and the show closed before we our ticket date.
So many years -so many shows. When my younger d (also an actress/singer was in high school and home from college on break) we really saw many many shows, both musicals and non-musicals⦠Gypsy with Bernadette Peters, Company, revival of Ragtime (one of my favorite shows ever), Light in the Piazza, Sunday in the Park with George, Contact, revival of A Chorus Line, revival of Guys and Dolls with Lauren Graham, Putnam County Spelling Bee, Wicked (Halloween night after opening night), 110 in the Shade with Audra McDonald⦠and more including the bi-lingual revival of West Side Story.
Most recently, Audra in Lady Day at Emersonās Bar and Grillā¦truly amazing, Once (finally saw it before it closed), A Gentlemanās Guide to Love and Murder which was very enjoyable. I do recommendā¦
Next up⦠getting tickets tomorrow for Fun Home⦠and on my list are The King and I with Kelli OāHara. Loved her in the revival of South Pacific and how could I forget, revival of The Pajama Game with Harry Connick Jr. also, plus Light in the Piazza⦠I am sure that I am forgetting so much more⦠but to some up:
Classic Rogers & Hammerstein
Sondheim
I agree with the list above- great choices
I like most of the Broadway musicals Iāve seen. And some off Broadway ones as well. That being saidā¦I saw Dr. Zhivago the Musical a couple of weeks agoā¦I donāt give it a chance for a long run.
Shows I would see again and againā¦Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, Sound of Music, Nunsense, Godspell, West Side Story, Into the Woods, Secret Garden.
@thumper1 , Dr. Zhivago closed yesterday.
Yes, also loved Jersey Boys. Just enjoyed seeing mt S play Cinderallsās prince in Into the Woods.
Oh geez. I knew it wasnāt terrificā¦butā¦sheesh.
āSit Down, Johnā is a fun opening number, and then thereās the āletterā song between John and AbigailāI love their heartfelt āyours, yoursā refrain."
I recently read David McColloughās biography of John Adams and was amazed about how much of the lyrics of 1776 came out of the actual letters between John and Abigail. Fabulous read. And yes, I love the musical - I saw it on Broadway with William Daniels. And then there was the revival, which I didnāt see but have heard, with Brent Spiner (Star Trek TNGās Data) as John.
The revival that I saw of 1776 was the one with Brent Spiner⦠it was great, we all loved it⦠long time ago now however. It was just announced that 1776 will be part of next season āEncoresā at City Center. If you are not familiar with this series they run for four nights, not a fully staged production, usually some big names ārevisitingā story and scores from bygone shows.
From my previous post⦠forgot that I saw Caberet this season also with Alan Cummings and this time I saw the version with Emma Stone⦠absolutely loved it⦠he totally owns this role and she was really good too.
Alan Cumming truly does own the role. I was interested to see him in the revival after seeing him back in the late 90s. Still wonderful, of course. Other actors I saw in the role - Raul Esparza, Norbert Leo Butz, Michael C. Hall (who was fabulous), Neil Patrick Harris (who was not!), John Stamos, Adam Pascal, and maybe a couple more whom I am forgetting. None of them came close to giving a performance like Alanās.
Darn. I wish I could see him in that role because I love the play.
I thought Porgy & Bess was an opera, but if it counts as a musical, I love the score.
I prefer comedies though, like On The Twentieth Century & Duck Soup.
I also like Sunday in the Park with George, but that, Iāve only seen on television.
First, I love this thread Iām one of those people who, if she werenāt embarrassed by her less-than-lovely voice, could easily burst into context-appropriate Broadway lyrics at any given moment.
Iāve only seen King & I, Annie, & Grease on Broadway (none of which Iād list as my favorites, though I credit some of the King & I lyrics for encouraging me to fake self-confidence until I believed it myself. And I do love the opening of Annie ā always wanted to play that trumpet solo and finally did in a community theatre version.
Favorite shows:
Man of La Mancha ā I love that one person believing intensely in someone elseās goodness can actually transform them.
Brigadoon - just donāt play the original cast album (no need for Fiona to sound so operatic ā try singing more like Julie Andrews)
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum - holds a special place in my heart because it was the first show I ever played in the pit ā and I love how Iāve been in the pit for so many rehearsals of that show and I can still hear a line that Iāve never noticed before.
Cinderella ā the Lesley Ann Warren tv version, not the actual Broadway script and I found the Julie Andrews tv version disappointing ā maybe because I wasnāt 8 years old when I first saw it
Had a great time with a local community theatre performing Yeston & Kopitās Phantom.
Have a special place in my heart for Wizard of Oz & Les Mis with fond memories of my daughter performing a lead.
Some peopleās favorites are shows that I donāt care for: Chorus Line, Cats, Carousel (love the music, hate parts of the show), Cabaret (another love the music, hate the show). I also canāt understand enthusiasm for Meet Me in St. Louis (not mentioned here, but itās a local fave.)
Ahh⦠I do love this threadā¦
