Favorite interior paint colors

Timely thread! I know from experience that the lighting in your house makes such a difference when choosing a color. I chose a color that I saw in another house and it looked totally different in mine - and I chose eggshell instead of flat (kids were young at the time) Is there a rule of thumb when choosing colors for rooms with northern and southern exposures?

Ben Moore’s Abingdon Putty is one of my favorites. (I also like Castleton Mist, but it’s a tough color and I’ve never had a spot where I could use it, so perhaps that tells us something about it! ) My double parlor/music room is Princeton Gold, and the dining and powder rooms across the hall are from the same color strip…I think it might be Henderson Buff. In any case, it is a greenish buff.

I’ve always like Waterbury Green, too, but I’ve only used it on the outside of a house. (Trim on a natural brown shingle cottage.)

All of the above are from the Historical Color Collection. I’ve always had old houses, and I’ve found that you can’t go very wrong with that group.

I use Linen White for all of the trim. I ALWAYS paint sample patches on the walls in several places and live with them for a few days at least before committing to a new color.

My chocolate room is painted a light yellowish green color from the Sherwin Williams Martha Stewart collection called “Sencha,” after the green tea of that name. Everyone seems to love it.

Northern light will tend to be bluer, that may also have been a factor for that yellow that turned green. It will also be more even and cast fewer shadows (hence the reason artists like it.)

Am looking for a gold to paint DH’s home office. He has lots of wood stained bookcases, hardwood floors, wood stain blinds.

Doesn’t anyone use Behr or Valspar (whichever are the standards at HD/Lowe’s). Is it really going to make THAT much difference?

I love to play with colors because a) I do fabric art and color is my strong suit there and b) it is a cheap reno that I can do.

BM White Satin.
gorgeous pale blue…changes from white in full sun to beautiful beachy cool blue in shadow. It looks great with stark clean white trim.

Lowe’s also sells great paint. I also recommend it.

Barley … beautiful neutral with a hint of color that changes with light and the decorations of the room.

Matermia, I also love Barley, had a lot of it in our last house.

CountingDown, I know. It’s hard to believe the cost different is warranted. I have used HD paint in the past and found that the texture goes chalky pretty quickly. Have had better luck with Lowe’s. Benjamin Moore paint has a creaminess to it that you really do feel. Also, my painters tell me it is easier to work with. Happy painters are a good thing!

Musicmom, I am intrigued by your description of White Satin. It sounds beautiful. We recently painted a bedroom for DD who asked for it to be blue and then left for the summer. I found it pretty stressful finding a blue that I could live with. I think blue rooms are very tricky. Anyway, finally found one that fit the bill – BM Marlboro Blue (historic collection). It looked awful on the paper sample, but was beautiful on the walls.

After renovating two bathrooms, a bedroom and a dining room this summer I have learned that no matter how pressured you are feeling it pays off to really take your time until you find the right color.

sewhappy-
I agree with you about blues… we happen to LOVE blue in our family so it is hard to pick a color that is NOT blue! But the BM white satin is so subtle and changeable, love it!
I will have to look up your BM Marlboro blue…never know when we might need another good blue in the house.

We liked Rlaph Lauren Thoroughbred and BEnjamin Moore Stonehouse.

Roxbury Caramel by Ben Moore, very rich looking, I have two rooms in it love it! Its a historical color!

I am trying to have home depot make some crab apple for me but they no longer carry it. Are you able to read the color mix ratios on the can and can you please send them to me so I can have someone mix a quart for me. Thank you in advance…

Scottmh, Home Depot just made me some Crab Apple about 2 months ago out in their Concord CA location.

After literally months of trial and error (translation: lots of money in sample paint, boards, and mini-roller trays) we hired a decorator. It was the best $200 for an hour of her time that I have ever spent. (She was at no charge for the initial consult, this was our follow up with her.) She highly recommended Benjamin Moore “Monroe Bisque”, a nice shade in the candlelight family.

Edit: On the Crab Apple from HD, they used Glidden paint, maker of their Ralph Lauren.

It’s been popular for awhile, but I love Sherwin Williams Blonde, which is a warm neutral. Ivoire is a little lighter and Restrained Gold is a shade darker. Just as lilmom says, paint can look very different depending on the exposure. I had to go a little cooler to get the look in my space.

I have Benjamin Moore Navajo White in my hallways and downstairs.

I love Ben Moore Barley, have it on my living room, dining room and family room walls (they are all open to each other) and use Navaho as the trim color.

Saw this last week and it made me think of this thread

I just painted a bedroom with Behr Fresh Day, a very light greenish-blue. I have a lot of seascape pictures/decor and it works perfectly. Looks almost white in daylight and more depth of color in artificial light.
