Favorite places to eat in NOLA

Three Muses . . . has anyone ever been? Looks like a great early evening tapas and music spot - arrive by 6pm with early entertainment before those 10pm shows. Any reviews? (Frenchmen)

This past Christmas D gave me a cookbook called Nashville Chef’s Table which highlighted a variety of local restaurants, some that we have tried and others that we want to try. When we were in NOLA, we discovered there was one for that area as well :http://www.amazon.com/dp/0762781408/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2VY6K6VIGYVPT&coliid=I87R9T3WF4ESG. If you have enough time, I think it would be fun to read that prior to your visit.

We just spent 4 days in NOLA. The breakfast place on Magazine street which we enjoyed every morning was Surry’s Cafe http://www.surreyscafeandjuicebar.com/Surreys-New-Orleans-Restaurant.html

Coming form CA by the end of 3 days of local cuisine we all craved something a bit lighter and healthier. This fit the bill: <a href=“New Orleans - Zea Rotisserie & Bar”>http://zearestaurants.com/locations/new-orleans/.

@12rmh18 did you do the 2 hour $40 kayak tour through Kayak-ti-yat? It seems like you just contact them to self-arrange a time . . . yes? That looks like a great option - not too big a chunk of time, but still getting out there.

Three Muses is a great little place. My friends play there all the time, although they are usually the later shows. Drop me a message a few days before you go I can suggest some entertainment. If you are there on a Tuesday for example, hit up The Maple Leaf (late), ReBirth Brass Band plays there every Tuesday.

@2vu0609 Thanks for linking that cookbook. I collect New Orleans cook books and do not have that one!

So they really aren’t strict about age? In addition to the Rebirth at the Maple Leaf I had identified a recurring Sunday night Hot 8 at the Howlin’ Wolf but the ticketing site says 18+ no exceptions and Saintkid doesn’t turn 18 for another month after we go.

Howlin Wolf is strict with the age. Bennie Pete is very sick right now and they have cancelled all tours. Still performing locally when he is up it but there is a chance they wouldn’t be playing anyway.

Oops, dolphlvr6 - French Quarter it is. Freudian slip.

saintfan - yes, it was through Kayak-iti-yat. The owners of the company are a very nice young couple, and the 2-hour twilight tour was just the right amount of time. I highly recommend it. Check Groupon or Living Social in New Orleans to see if they offer a coupon. Cafe Degas was within a couple blocks of start/end point for the kayak tour, so we just walked there after working up a good appetite from a 2-hour paddle. (Note: make reservations if you plan to go for dinner: Cafe Degas is popular among locals).

I also recommend a bicycle tour if you have time. NOLA is relatively flat and easy to cycle. You can cover a lot more territory by bicycle than by foot. There are a number of companies that offer bike tours, including tours into the 9th Ward which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. We did a 10-mile/3-hour tour with Big Easy Bike Tours (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60864-d1752439-Reviews-Big_Easy_Bike_Tours-New_Orleans_Louisiana.html), which included a visit to St. Louis #3 cemetery (very interesting) and the Treme neighborhood. Bob, the owner/guide, is also a radio announcer who knows the NOLA music scene well & can offer good recommendations.

As of September, there are free concerts in Lafayette Square and Louis Armstrong Parks on Wednesdays and Thursdays Alas, no joy for summer concerts. <a href=“Fall Concert Series in Armstrong Park & Lafayette Square | WWOZ New Orleans 90.7 FM”>http://www.wwoz.org/new-orleans-community/fall-concert-series-armstrong-park-lafayette-square.

Gambit just posted their best of list http://www.bestofneworleans.com/gambit/food/Content?oid=2243580

Darn! It looks like all the parks concerts start up just after we leave . . . we fly home the evening of the 18th

It’s New Orleans, there will be plenty of other things going on!

For live music with under 18s - try Preservation Hall, Snug Harbor, Tipitinas, Rock n Bowl. There are others, but those are the ones our kids enjoyed.

I had been eyeing The Joint for BBQ - glad that it has good review!

Has anyone ever been to New Orleans Cake Café? They have a crab sandwich and a crab omelet that have been calling out my name.

http://www.nolacakes.com/

Not yet but I’ve been hearing WONDERFUL things about it.

How is The Maple Leaf with age? . . . the kid looks much older (even more so if I get him to grow a beard for the trip) and will be with his mom, but near the universities maybe they card even more.

I just asked my friend who goes there all the time. They are VERY strict right now because they got busted for serving someone underage. She said when ReBirth plays their sisters work the door and they are VERY tough.

:(

I’d love for my last meal to be at Commander’s Palace. Not only has the food always been wonderful, but the people are so warm and gracious.

Goupon 2 hour kayaking trip for 2 at 50% discount . . . check! Outdoor all ages concert tickets purchased for Trombone Shorty and Galactic in my own city . . . check! I am on a roll here folks.
