Favorite Xmas Cookie?

Does anyone have a recipe for an excellent rolled sugar cookie? I have a few I’ve tried over the years that are decent but not excellent.

I’m looking for one that is:

easy to roll out
tasty
uses real butter
holds its shape for cut out cookies
more of a sugar cookie than shortbread
can hold up to royal icing

Thanks in advance!

@BunsenBurner , what was your recipe?

From the Joy of Cooking, Consolation, so nothing special. The super easy stuff as I was in a hurry. I used dark Ghirardelli chocolate… and orange liqueur.

@doschicos this is the sugar cookie I make. I think it’s better than any other I’ve ever had, though I think the main difference is the little bit of orange zest.

2/3 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp orange zest
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp lemon juice
1 egg
4 tsp milk
2 cups sifted flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt

Cream butter and sugar add the flavorings and stir. Then add the egg and beat till fluffy. Stir in the milk. Add the flour, baking powder and salt. Divide dough into two pieces and chill at least one hour. Roll out thin. 1/8" max. Bake on a greased cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 6 to 8 minutes. I use a butter icing, so I can’t say for sure if they’ll stand up to royal icing, but I can say it’s a good cookie.

Thanks, @mathmom! I’ll try that next time as I went ahead and made a batch of dough and have it chilling in the fridge. I added some lemon to it as, like you, I enjoy the citrus note in my sugar cookies.

Aha -found the JoC truffles online. Definitely not Consolation-quality, but tasty enough for my peeps.
