Fearless girl

alh, that may be how you felt where you were standing, but I doubt that most of the population sees that you can reclaim a demeaning word and turn it into a power word.

I did see some good t-shirts that signified the March that were classy, though.

BD: because we have been on this board together for such a long time, and you are one of my favorite posters,I’ll try one last time.

I appreciate you as a feminist pioneer. On a recent thread you described giving back the same as sweet revenge to sexual harassment. I was skeptical this was the best response, but I never walked in your shoes.

Why then are you concerned about being “classy” at the Women’s March? I didn’t understand that to have been a concern of yours in pushing back against harassment.

“I suspect that the vast majority of the women who have been out there in the trenches, might see it the same way.”

From someone who spent many years in the ‘trenches’ in a highly male dominated profession, I don’t see it the same way.

It’s a play on words not an obscene name for a vagina. Pussy as in cat, as in a hat with ears?

Who cares about the mockers. They were going to mock regardless, were they not? I agree with @alh.

I was there too! While I did not wear a pink pussy hat to the March it was actually a really cool sight. It is really hard to explain but the sea of all these women of all ages, races and everything else coming together wearing their hats proudly was pretty awesome. A unifying message of female solidarity.

Brave v fearless. I think you need to be truly fearless to enter the shark infested waters of Wall St.

^Yup!

Well thank you, alh. You are one of my favorite posters also, and I really appreciate how you try to explain your point of view in a way that people can respect, even when they disagree with you. It makes people far more apt to listen to you.

I don’t know if “classy” is the word I was looking for. I just didn’t want something else that people could demean and make fun of women for, and turn into a joke. I thought the women’s march could be serious and important, and I didn’t want to give people any more ammunition. The hats didn’t bother me as much as I thought they would though, actually.

As far as doschicos point that “■■■■■” being a play on words, and a word for cat, well…we all know why that word was used as a symbol for the march. And in my world, it is obscene, and not complimentary towards women, so I can’t ever see that being a symbol of empowerment for women, at least not one that men would respect.

I guess we’ll just have to disagree. In my testosterone loaded environment, if I was to start talking about the ■■■■■ hats, I would get nothing but a groan and rolling eyes. And then comments behind my back.

Maybe I’ll go to the next march and try to keep an open mind about the hats. I’m most certain there will be another one.

You are sooooo right! Fearless and loaded with self confidence.

I sure hope so. As a money manager, I love when other managers make investments for irrational reasons. It makes it so much easier to profit against them.

To be clear, I am not against women on the board of directors. I just think it is really silly to make that the basis of an investment decision.

I’m another woman in a totally male-dominated field, and I don’t get the hats, either. Too old, I guess.

^^And I’ll bet you never were a girly-girl either.

My parents obviously failed to put an ounce of femininity into me. Maybe I could have appreciated this kind of thing otherwise.

^Ha, you’re right! My roommate my freshman year in college was a sorority girl. She tried to make me over and failed. We did make our boyfriends heart-shaped cakes, at least. That was about as girly as I got.

That makes three of us, ML and bus - women in mostly male fields who don’t get the hats. I would not burn my bra or walk dressed like a giant vagina either. I wanted to be at the march and had stuff ready to go, but we ended up looking at a house that we eventually hoping to buy. I have a feeling there will be other opportunities for marching soon.

Plenty of opportunities on the near horizon. And you don’t need to wear a pink hat.

Tax March 4/15
March for Science 4/22
Climate March 4/29
Immigrant’s March 5/6

Okay now, I want to hear about dressing like a giant vagina, too…what?

I so wanted to go, and then at the last minute decided not to, because I didn’t have anyone to go with, and just felt weird going alone. Should have taken my dogs, they’re girls. :o3 :o3

Found out later that a good friend of mine went (probably thought I was too conservative to go), and my mom wanted to go too. However, not only would she have worn a pussyhat, she would have been obnoxious. But I wish I’d have asked them.

Apparently, someone at the march was, bus, according to my kid who was there.

Wow, I hope she took a picture. That’s pretty radical for us out here…if she was at the Seattle march.

No photos of that costume, alas. Kid was actually working at the march, so she was busy helping direct the crowd, but she did see the bald eagles flying low above the crowd when the marchers began to walk. That was COOL.

Awesome!

I’ll bet THEY weren’t wearing pussyhats

I’m kind of confused, @busdriver11. Did you support the march or not? Up above you sounded really dismissive of it, but as of #34, you say you wanted to attend. I guess you are saying you support the idea, but hated the hats? (But I don’t hear you saying the hats made you not attend.) You say you wish another symbol had been chosen. What symbol do you think would have been as effective and universal? (Probably not as sassy and apt, but you can’t have everything.)

And, on subject, I think “Fearless Girl” the sculpture is wonderful and I can’t figure out what distinction several of you (including Bus) are trying to make between “brave” and “fearless.” Personally, I think, literally, “Brave” is probably better. But “Fearless Girl” sounds better as the description of the sculpture. I’d be happy to hear what I am missing in why several of you seem to think “fearless” is different and materially better (?) than “brave.”
