Unlike some schools which, I understand, place all the Febs in a particular program overseas or elsewhere for the fall semester, Middlebury encourages Febs to devise their own plans and not to necessarily try to get college credit for the semester.
This may be a good approach because I hear that the rest of the class finds the Febs who arrive to be very interesting because they have been all over the world and/or doing creative things for the entire semester. Of course, you have to examine the cost of doing that, but there may be some relatively inexpensive options. Or there may be schools your child could attend in the fall that would be actually be less expensive than Midd (like the University of Edinburgh or other overseas options). Midd does have a pamphlet for Febs with lots of ideas in it.
