Corrected link for fafsa 4caster, sorry:)
Tutoring is a real job. Remember to file your tax return to report your self-employment (tutoring) income, by April 15th, if you received $400 or more in 2015.
If you take a gap year and you and your brother both start college in fall 2017, you may qualify for the Pell grant.
Does anyone know if Gates Millenium and Questbridge are only for high school seniors (can gap year students apply)?
What is your intended major?
Is there a community college you can commute to from home?
The OP does not qualify for GMS:
@“Erin’s Dad” How do I not qualify for GMS? I meet the requirements for Asian Pacific Islander American because I am of Southeast Asian descent. I most likely don’t qualify for it because I don’t meet the Pell Grant eligibility but I am certain I meet the ethnicity part.
Pacific Islander includes persons having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa or other Pacific Islands. Citizens of the republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau are eligible to be nominated. This is not an all inclusive list. Please see the U.S. Census Bureau listing at www.census.gov
From the GMS website link posted earlier:
What ethnic groups comprise Asian Pacific Islander Americans?
Asian Pacific Islander Americans include persons having origin from Asia and/or the Pacific Islands. Asian includes persons having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia or the Indian subcontinent. Pacific Islander includes persons having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa or other Pacific Islands. Citizens of the republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau are also eligible to be nominated
The GMS definition from their website certainly does seem to include Southeast Asia/Indian subcontinent.
Asian” refers to those having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. “Pacific Islander” refers to those having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands. The Asian and Pacific Islander population is not a homogeneous group; rather, it comprises many groups who differ in language, culture, and length of residence in the United States. Some of the Asian groups, such as the Chinese and Japanese, have been in the United States for several genera- tions. Others, such as the Hmong, Vietnamese, Laotians, and Cambodians, are comparatively recent immigrants. Relatively few of the Pacific Islanders are foreign born.

It said that “Asian” includes having origins in any of the original peoples of the Southeast Asia. I’m from Burma and Burma is from Southeast Asia. I wouldn’t be considered Pacific Islander because I’m not from any Pacific Island.
These scholarships and websites and the government tend to put Asian and Pacific Islander together like Asian and Pacific Islander American Asian Scholarship Fund and Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
So I would most likely and definitely qualified. I am sure without a doubt.
What I meant by real job is a job that has W-2 form so tutoring wouldn’t have that because it’s self-employment at least for my case. I have a question about filing for that. Do FAFSA or financial aid forms expect me to use the money I received from tutoring for college tuition? It’s because I have little in my saving accounts. I have almost depleted it for college tours and things of that nature.
If I take a gap year then my parents would have to put two kids in college at once the following year. I don’t think that would go well. I also don’t think my parents want me to take a year off. I think they want me to go to college right away. I also wouldn’t know what to do if I took a gap year.
Yes, I do have a community college that is close to me and commutable. It’s also very reputable. A lot of people I know have done their time at CC and then transfer to the state uni. If I do that and live at home for four years I will have to pay only $11,000 a year including tuition and books. That’s how much it is a year for the state uni. So if I do that for 2 years that will be $22,000. So if I spread it over 4 years then that will be $5,500 a year for me. The CC that is close to me cost $3,000 a year. So that would be in total $8,800 which may be the best option for me, but I will have to see.
Yes.
The IRS expects you to file a 2015 income tax return if your net cash tutoring income is $400 or more.
If you took a gap year you could work and save the money for college.
What’s your intended major?
I plan on being an accounting major. I appreciate everyone’s help.
But I honestly don’t think staying at home for four years to save money will do well for me emotionally. I’m not very close to my family and the thought of staying home is not very appealing. Maybe I can stay for two years for CC and then transfer to out of state.
