This emphasizes need for more transparency. When you hear about highly accomplished students getting rejected and waitlisted while mediocre ones getting accepted, it’s not “holistic”, it’s rigged. We know some games, many other needs to be exposed.
How do you define “highly accomplished” and “mediocre”? Colleges don’t admit from highest stats down, and unless you see the applications and all the materials I don’t see how you could determine which students are more deserving of acceptance.
In case anyone has any doubts about the lengths Lori Loughlin and family went through to get the daughters into USC, check out the rowing resume they submitted with one of the girls’ application.
the latest is that the rowing photos that were used by Lori Loughlin’s daughter’s have been released, along with emails sent between the parties involved
Funny thing too-their form is horrible. It would be obvious to anyone who’s ever rowed, or even used an erg as part of a gym workout, that they don’t what they’re doing.
Well the coach of course was in on it so he or she knew the photos were fake. And the leeway give to coaches by adcoms means they pretty much trusted the photos were legit. Only the athletic director could have, I think, seen the photos and thought something was up.
Not only that, but they’re using a water rower, which - forgive me if I’m wrong - isn’t that considered more of the richie rich homeowner’s rower? All my friends who rowed and who have kids who row use the Concept2 rowers.
I’d be less concerned about that because it could be excused as a rower training at home on a parent’s equipment, but no self-respecting rower would do it that way they are. The second pic shows the “rower” with her hands to her chest and her legs bent. When you do the drive (the pulling part) correctly it’s legs-hips-arms. Any rower would learn that the first week in a novice boat.
I’m not even sure why they were encouraged to send pictures. The coach was already in on it and those pictures wouldn’t fool anyone who’d ever watched a regatta or worked out on an erg at a gym. Besides, who sends a picture of a private workout like this instead of a picture of their boat? It would be like someone sending a picture of himself in sweats at an arcade batting cage to show he was a top baseball recruit.
Warerrowers are really not designed as a Richie rich product. They sell an awful lot in Europe. The extra cost to make it more furniture like aligns with the much smaller living spaces and apartments which the equipment resides. They also last a long time.
Also the rowing community likes the feeling.
They sell many models at different price points and are used exclusively at orange theory and indo row gyms.
The CRASH-B’s, the world indoor rowing championships are held on Concept2’s. In my experience Concept2’s are the standard for rowing training and erg times.
That said, there would be nothing wrong with training on a water rower if one were actually training, not trying to scam one’s way into college…
ETA: I sent the link to my rower earlier today and she said she and her HS coxswain had already seen the pictures and were laughing their behinds off at them!
