*Despite the focus on budget in the Friday, Jan. 18 Board of Trustees meeting, Florida State University’s main governing body also approved the increase and implementation of several fees for the 2008-2009 school year, including the facility fee of $20 a semester as well as a $2 per credit hour for the construction of a new student health and wellness center and eventual improvements to the Oglesby Student Union.

“We really need three times the floor space we have for health and wellness,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Mary Coburn, when proposing the fee to the trustees. “We see over 60,000 patients a year in Thagard Student Health Center. A traditional pharmacy like CVS would fill 200 prescriptions in a day. We often do more like 500 a day.”

The new health center will also potentially include space for fitness and rehabilitation space, which is currently housed in the Leach Center.

“We also really want to shift the emphasis of student health so that we spend as much time keeping them well as we do healing them when they are ill,” said Coburn. “We think the model of providing for fitness activities in the same center where a physical therapist could take a student down to exercise equipment and show them how to exercise and strengthen where they’ve had an injury. We would like to expand the cardio and exercise facilities we have in the Leach Center.”

Coburn said more than 6,000 students go through the Leach Center.

“Also, this new (center) will provide a healthy, safe place for our students who are suffering from some body image problems,” said Student Body Vice President Clifford Counts. “It can be quite intimidating at the Leach Center to work out with people who look like they should be on Baywatch.”

The new health and wellness center would also house a mental health area and possibly eye and dental care space.

In addition to the construction of a new health center, the fee can also contribute to the expansion of the Oglesby Student Union.*
