I highly recommend that you a look at the new thread on the Parents Forum about student debt for vet school graduates. Your D may want to think long and hard about going to vet school. Many students are graduating with crushing student debt and are having a very tough time finding a job. Then when they do, the average starting salary is only $45K.

Aqua, just found that thread, had no idea it was that bad for vet grads. I knew it cost alot of money, and there are only 28 vet schools in entire country but had no idea new grads having that much trouble finding work and starting salary that low. Def will not be able to talk D into different field, wanted to be vet since elementary, never even talked about anything else. I just dont understant why especially salary so low, I know when i take my dog to vet its more then my Doctors visit. I can only hope for one of two things, that is she changes her major before she decides to go to vet school, or something turns around and vets will be in high demand with alot higher starting salary…Neither of these 2 options are promising…I will show her the articles.

Having a 4.0 UW is all good, but what are her test scores? That plays into the merit aid as well. If she really wants to go to vet school she needs to be smart about undergrad spending. Yes, most likely it’s too late to get merit aid at schools that offer that. Their tend to have deadlines usually no later than Feb 1st, many are even Dec 1st or earlier for their top merit awards.

You also need to check to see if you have to use his income when you file your FAFSA. Go to the Financial Aid board here and do a search for non-custodial parent. It’s very possible you won’t have to use his income which should help. It’s too bad you didn’t find this board in the fall as people could have helped you walk through this process.
