Feeling down about my height

It’s not that tall guys are tall, but that they grew up being comfortable as the center of attention. They become skilled at “holding court.” All of the dating coaching revolves around learning that confident set of behavior. Indeed, kids who are short in junior high but gain their height later do no better than their permanently short counterparts.

My oldest is 6’1", athletic, good looking and personable, but was only 5’4" and 120 lbs in 9th grade. He is 19 and has never had a girlfriend.

Don’t feel so down about your height.

Three days ago, I went to a Fortune 200 company where the “Big (or should I say “Tall” ;)) Man In Charge” was a whopping 5’4. Yes, sir. He was almost 4 inches short than I am! Guess how tall the other men were in the room? At max, I’d say 5’8. They were just as tall as you. This did not stop them from speaking up, asking questions, demonstrating they’re leadership, getting involved, etc. Do not think that your height hinders you for success. Your behaviors and actions will speak louder than your height. Additionally, your height is not the only physical attribute that matters. Focus on those other areas if you feel insecure about your height. I must say, though, it was amusing getting up from the en of the interview and being taller than all of the men in the room. I was about 6’ with my heels and I am a 5’7 woman.

Personally, I go for tall guys. Why? I am a tall woman. It’s understandable that a taller than average woman would go for a taller than average man. You, OP, are a little below average. (Like an inch). There are plenty of girls that will go for a guy of your height because they generally are shorter than you. Girls don’t generally go for physical traits in a guy. They focus more on the emotional traits.

And when a woman is a leader, she is inevitably called a *****. :)

Exactly.

Collegeissues, think Andrew Carnegie (5’1), Al Pacino (5’5), Tom Cruise (5’7) or Henry Kravis (not sure but he is NOT tall).

The earnings study is mentioning a correlation, not a causation. Taller people tend to be smarter, and smarter people tend to make more money. I doubt height nowadays really has any meaningful impact on wages outside of very few industries were height is an important factor in doing the job.

I guess I can’t really comment on what women find attractive. Sure, you’re probably better off being taller, but it’s not a be-all-end-all requirement either.

This is absolutely, categorically untrue. I have never known or heard a woman in all my years among all my acquaintances mention a “stringent height cutoff.” Women are as individual as men in their preferences and attractions.

I’m 5’7" and I’m hotter than hell.

no, really. can someone turn on the air conditioner?

There is no formula to attraction. There is no formula to financial success. You will always be able to focus on some perceived shortcoming to explain away a disappointment or failure. What happens between your ears is what determines your satisfaction with life.

Let it go. 5’7" is NOT a problem.

You mean jobs like these?

Outside of a very few industries…

Yeah, when I think about some of the unfortunate things guys said to me…

really? really? I know it is true in my case but I didn’t think it was a general rule.

There have been numerous studies and articles saying so. Here are the first 5 google searches:

From your second link: “the correlation between height and intelligence is not that high.”

Some petite women prefer dating shorter men. When heights are closer, there can be less power imbalance to overcome within the couple relationship.

You will someday be denied a first date by some woman, for sole reason of height. She’ll tell you or a friend. That’s happened occasionally to my own sons. My youngest thanked her, later saying he felt genuinely “Lucky to know just how shallow she was, before wasting any more time and money dating her.” He soon found a much more lovely g.f. through the attributes described above: listening, humor, caring, shared values.

I think you’re about equal in height to the average American woman, not that statistics rule matters of the heart anyway. My 5’5" son dated some taller women but married a lovely woman of similar height.

Height says nothing about the character quality of a human being. Most people worth anything will understand that. It’s a DNA gift granted to some, not others, but there are many more: keen eyesight, handsome or cute facial features, good complexion, analytical intelligence, propensity to humor, musicality, physical grace and balance…and/or HEIGHT. But nobody gets them all, so just work to maximize what you have.

Since your concern is “success” I must add that IME longterm success in career and love relationships has more to do with building human connections than making initial impressions.

Mike Bloomberg is short. Officially it’s listed at 5’8", however I met him 15+ years ago and I would say 5’6" would be generous.

Another reflection on success: my 5’5" actor son is currently cast in a wonderful off-off-Broadway production – as Napoleon. I saw him last night, terrific show. Should I feel sorry for his height or glad for his career? You decide.

@Booklady Don’t shoot the messenger.

My son is shorter than average and has no problem with the ladies. Attitude is everything. Yes, women do prefer taller men in the abstract, but when it comes to real live people, most women want someone confident, kind, and considerate. Work on those three characteristics and you will find success in love and life.

My younger brother’s best friend in HS was 5’4". He was voted most popular and best looking. He was then and he still is now (almost 30 years later) a chick magnet. The ladies love him. He dated women as tall as 6’.

My DH is 6’3" our oldest DS who is 19 is 5’6". DH has said a lot of the guys in corporate are tall. However there is one disadvantage to being tall. Tall people can seem intimidating/scary and depending on your job(for example when managing people) that is not a good thing. DH works very hard on making sure to come across as pleasant/friendly all the time. DS is pretty laid back anyway but there is no way I can see anyone ever being intimidated/scared by him. I would forget about the height thing and just be yourself.
