Yes, IMO that was an example (not the only one) of a weak point in the storyline. OK, Robert had an old conviction, but it wasn’t for theft, so it didn’t seem like that all fit together. Totally agree about him not having a good lawyer – or even a half-way decent one!
She wanted us to experience reading a play. I felt I didn’t need the experience, as I had read plays (Macbeth, Julius Caesar to name a couple) back in the day. I thought I’d enjoy Raisin in the Sun performed more than read but enjoyment wasn’t the point in this instance. Yikes is right. I’m way too old not to choose an audio multi-cast performance, if I want.

I suspect that the whole business about Robert’s trial may have wound up on the cutting room floor. IMO, it shouldn’t have; it should at least have been worth a couple of pages.
