The real question is what the topic says about you. Remember, the point of the essay is for schools to learn not only how you write, but who you are and what you will add to the school culture. An essay about how feminism is treated in your country without reference to your place as a feminist will not be effective, but one that wraps itself around you, your past experiences and future goals could be.
Think of it this way: the topic of the college essay should always be the writer him/herself. The “topic”- feminism, food, sports, belly button lint, whatever-is just a vehicle for you to tell the schools what you want them to know about you.
