Final List: Need to add some financial safeties, also feel free to comment on ED options [KS resident, 3.85 GPA, <$25k, biology (not pre-med)]

Mt Holyoke meets the numbers -as does Smith. UVM not affordable.

What about Oxford at Emory? Though not a safety, maybe the NPC would be affordable.

Centre College says they meet 100% of need with an average package of $40K and 90% get money.

If that’s the case and direct costs $70,430, maybe their NPC is worth a look?

True.

I just think it will be difficult to find a true safety that meets full financial need (not merit).

I also think it will be difficult to find a school that will provide enough guaranteed merit to bring the cost down to KU…that the student finds suitable.

Apply…and see where she is accepted and what the costs are.

I thinks she’s gping to have lots of choices! No need to add more.

These are out there and put many above - but it’s back to that question - are they better than KU?

Only the student can answer.

It’s sad - and crazy - how much college is. Some parents will spend more in four years than their kids first home.

Western Carolina University is just over $26,000 without merit for OOS students. Would she consider applying?

Smith is need blind I believe so maybe it’s a better choice than Wellesley ? Of course not if Boston itself is a priority.

Less than half submitted a test at Smith.

I think Wellesley is need blind as well.

Yep and W&L but not northeastern l.

The write up on Wellesley - and it’s a write up with the student not having been -made me uncomfortable. And it will be a harder admit.

But if Boston is priority …

At $30k perhaps Muhlenberg and other lesser known names are in - as the cost of getting kids today. I just don’t know. Some of these schools are struggling for revenue and $30k is better than $0k.

The student profile, outside of no test, seems outstanding and has strong leadership.

I think it is hard to predict which schools will pan out, as many of these meets full need schools are quite competitive. Hopefully Muhlenberg will work.

As for safeties with merit that the student will consider..that’s a tough one.

What about the University of Richmond? Not a safety, but is need blind and meets full need.

I mentioned Western Carolina University above, as the cost of attendance for non-residents is within your budget.

She can also take a look at the University of New Mexico. It is possible that their scholarship brings the cost down to/close to your budget.

If your daughter likes Washington & Lee I would put that above Northeastern, as they are need blind and it was mentioned that Northeastern is not. Is she ok with Northeastern’s Oakland campus?

She would actually be happy with NUin – the study abroad for one semester program that NEU often offers. The university aid transfers to that program so still affordable (for us). One of the majors she wants doesn’t work great at the Oakland campus (or the London campus). However, only first choice location (Boston) is binding.

And I realize that I didn’t make it clear we ARE going to visit the ED options. I just wanted to get people’s feedback on each. Sadly - because of my OWN error - I’ve gotten mostly ‘that’s a terrible idea’ feedback. Lesson to me to be more clear

I think that Wellesley and Northeastern are reaches for your daughter, but if you visit, she loves them, they are affordable etc then she should absolutely ED!

She has some more realistic, affordable (as per NPC) targets such as Muhlenberg…that’s good!

The biggest issue here is the lack of a safety, as she plans to take a gap year if Kansas is the only acceptance that is affordable. That means she doesn’t have a true safety, imo.

I want to thank everyone for their posts and I see that you are trying to be helpful. I really do–Unfortunately -it came across as super discouraging and not helpful. (And honestly - a lot classism)

Not every successful applicant has a 1600/4.0 and full-pay-- not even at the ivies. Sometimes (always?) it’s the things that make a student unique that gets them admitted.

Mods - please feel free to close this thread. Sorry to waste everyone’s time.

I actually think she will get some acceptances. The issue is affordability…and the possibility (?) that the NPCs may not be entirely accurate at some schools…given what is going on in the country (I will not say anything more). That is why I encourage a mix…including affordable publics and need blind/meets full need schools that are possibly less of a reach.

And I always recommend an affordable safety regardless of a students gpa, test scores, and accomplishments. Unless I am mistaken, this thread was about finding affordable safeties.

Best wishes to your daughter!
