Final MT Decisions Background - Class of 2023

Auditions: I feel like we traveled endlessly. It started with Wright State and BW and Marymount in November, then CCM, Otterbein, and Pace in December, NY Unifieds in January, Shenandoah and then Chicaco Unifieds in February.

My D’s first acceptance was from Marymount. I was OBSESSED with checking that portal. I literally knew within 2 minutes of when it changed. The absolute fear of not going anywhere was over. We will always have a great affection for Marymount for the joy they brought to our home that day. My D and I had an agreement that I could check her emails and portals and make sure that all the details were taken care of. I am so glad we discussed this beforehand and it just became routine. There were so many things throughout the process that I realized needed to be done, or followed up on, or asked about that my D wouldn’t have caught, mainly because I was obsessive about checking things, and she was trying not to obsess. I half-jokingly told her that I would take the responsibility of being stressed and obsessive so she didn’t have to, and she was totally fine with that. At the end of this slow torture of endless waiting and hoping and dreaming, we were in a totally wonderful place, having some really great programs to choose from. She spent a lot of time really digging into each program and learning as much as she could about it. She knew enough about each program to want to audition for them, but not so much that she’d fallen in love with the programs, because she’d had her heart broken before. She narrowed it down to Shenandoah and Otterbein. Both small programs with a very personal feel. And then BoCo came in with an acceptance and a very attractive scholarship that turned her head for a bit. She visited all 3, sat in on classes, saw a show or sat in on a rehearsal. The evening after she had spent the day at Shenandoah, she was telling me what their 2019/2020 season was going to be and filling me on the details of those shows (I am not of the theatre world), and she was talking about these shows in a way that made it pretty clear she really, really envisioned herself being a part of them. The next day, while she was visiting a dance class, I ran to the bookstore and secretly bought a whole bunch of Shenandoah merch to be able to whip out when she made her decision. But she also really liked Otterbein, and it’s only about 2 hours from our house, which is far enough to be away, but not too far to be able to come home more often. In the end, though, it came down to which program she just couldn’t live without. She loved them both, but Shenandoah was really her soul mate.

Final Decision: Really, we’ve always known it was going to be Shenandoah. During the first audition season, we saw Cabaret there and it was the most amazing production I’ve ever seen. We were in awe. And in love.

So, my baby girl is officially a Hornet and we couldn’t be more excited!!

@BrennaK what a great story, congrats!

@BrennaK
Congrats to you all!!!

About auditioning late in the season…I would not discourage it! I think the issue is only pertinent at schools with rolling admissions. So the comment about OCU makes sense if some slots were already filled. But many schools do not start making offers or filling any slots until all auditions are over. My own daughter auditioned on the final audition date at some schools and was accepted…this happened at Penn State and BOCO. She also auditioned on the final CMU date and was Priority Waitlisted. These schools were not rolling admissions.

@BrennaK Congratulations! So glad your D found her place!

@BrennaK… wow, I can’t imagine going through this twice back-to-back and then still having a son to go through it with. I guess the 'ol adage of “it’s a marathon, not a race” certainly applies in your case!

Sounds like your daughter has found the perfect fit in Shenandoah, congratulations!!!

Just to clarify, OCU does not not have a prescribed number of boys, girls, sopranos or tenors they are looking for. If you fit their auditioning criteria, you will be extended an offer whether you audition in November or March and whether or not they already have 3 other blonde ingenues or not. What I do think can happen towards those later auditions at OCU is that there is less talent money available because they already have offers out. So I think talent scholarships can possibly be smaller for those accepted later. Most likely you will still be offered some $ but perhaps not as much as those who auditioned earlier. It just really depends on how many have accepted those earlier offers already. And if they really want you, but you need more $ to make attending feasible, talk to them. Its not always possible to find more $, but its worth the ask.

Congratulations @BrennaK - another great gap year success story! What an inspiration and I’m so glad for you and your D.

Congratulations @NewToThis13! That sounds like a great program and a perfect fit for her. I agree with @CaMom13, it’s great to hear more about newer program options.

Congratulations @BrennaK! Great story and I had the same mixed reaction once my D started driving. “This is great…is this great?” Sounds like a great fit for her among some excellent choices.

@BrennaK and D Congrats! Wonderful story! Very familiar with Starbucks sitting:)

@BrennaK your story brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye - congrats to your girl for finding her place and big congrats to you for being a super mom and going through this twice so she could grow and thrive in an environment that is such a great fit!! well done!

Congrats @BrennaK ! Great story and another good case for gap years. I think my D would likely been more successful not trying to balance school, shows, and auditions, but she is ready to go! My D spent five years going to JTF and workshopped two shows in NY. Great memories! Best of luck at Shenandoah!

So here goes:

Programs applied to: University of Miami, FSU, FAU, Florida Southern, BoCo, UCF, Pace, UArts, Shenandoah. My D had a very, very small list of schools and she had decided, for better or worse, that she did not want to do Unifieds.

Prescreens: FSU, BoCo, Pace, ShenCo and UCF. Passed all except UCF (go figure).

Withdrew from: Pace, UArts

Academically accepted to all schools that have separate academic acceptances.

Artistically accepted: FAU, Florida Southern, ShenCo

Waitlisted: BoCo (she withdrew from waitlist)

Coach: none. She does have a private voice teacher and attends a PA high school.

Summer Program: FSU summer musical theatre intensive as a rising senior.

Background: My D started singing as soon as she could talk and had a great memory for lyrics even at a very young age. At 7 her dad and I (who don’t have an artistic bone in our bodies but have always loved Musicals) took her to see Wicked and as soon as it was over she told us that this is what she wanted to do when she grew up. We bought her the cast album and within a week she knew the lyrics to every song. We thought it was cute so we would take her to see whatever show we thought was age appropriate thinking it was a phase she would grow out of. Needless to say, she still hasn’t grown out of this phase lol. We put her into a summer theatre camp before 5th grade and she was cast in a supporting role. After that she was hooked. She auditioned for a middle school that had a theatre magnet and made it into the program. At that point she started taking private voice lessons as she really had no training. She continued to audition for different local theatres and was consistently cast in lead roles through middle and high school. When it was time for high school she wanted to audition for a very competitive conservatory style arts high school in our area. She was one of 14 girls picked for the program and that school has been her home as much as our own home. While I could not have asked for a better education, the pressure on these kids to make it into “top tier” college programs is pretty intense. So while the smart thing would be to cast a wide net, my D went in the complete opposite direction.

We filmed all her prescreens and had everything submitted by early October. Also in October she took part in the Florida Theatre Conference which serves as a prescreen or actual audition for a number of programs. From FTC she received an offer for the FAU BFA program and callbacks for a number of other programs including Roosevelt, AMDA, U Tampa and a few other programs. She had one fall audition at U of Miami which she saw as a practice as she really had no interest in staying in her home town. After that she auditioned at FSU (which she absolutely loved), Florida Southern (which she liked more than she had expected) and ShenCo (which she also loved). After her ShenCo audition as we were sitting at the airport waiting for our flight home she turned to me and told me to cancel the rest of her auditions. I chalked it up to exhaustion as we had been traveling non-stop for the past few weeks. After we were home a few days she again told me to cancel the auditions she had left which were Pace and UArts. When I asked her why, she said that she felt really good about her ShenCo audition and that if it wasn’t FSU or ShenCo she would go to FAU or Florida Southern to which she also had been accepted into the BFA MT program.

The day that we knew FSU was making “the calls” was a very long day at my house and the first time that my D started questioning her decision to not audition for more programs. Thankfully, she bounced back pretty quickly and while I wanted to burn all her FSU gear from her time there over the summer, she was much more pragmatic than I was so the shirts survived our fire pit. With all the social media she knew exactly when the ShenCo calls were going out so the staring at the phone started again. We were on our way to a show rehearsal when her phone rang and as soon as she saw the number her hands started shaking and her sister and I started screaming. I’m sure that we all looked like crazy people in the car but as soon as she hung up the tears started flowing and I knew she had her next home. We called her Dad and when she got home from rehearsal, my hubby had drawn the ShenCo Mascot on a chalk wall we have and it’s still up.

Final Decision: Shenandoah Conservatory. She loves the school, she loves the professors, she loves the area, she loved their production of Bonnie and Clyde which she saw a few weeks ago and she loves the group of incoming MT students who have all reached out to one another and have been constantly snap chatting for the past few weeks.

C’mon Hornets! @BrennaK look forward to meeting you!!!

Congrats to your daughter @minicp, what a fun story. I’m so glad she got that call from one of her top two programs!
