Congrats @mommyMT
Congratulations @mommyMT ! I would say congratulations on a safe landing, but sounds like you are preparing for a takeoff! Best of luck in next year’s journey and hope your D soars at OU.
@mommyMT congrats! great outcome
@mommyMT. Congratulations to you and your daughter!
@mommyMT Congrats to you! Thanks for sharing such valuable information. To all those out there who think they need coaches, this is just another example that it is not necessary to achieve success.
@teacher124 Our d’s know each other! My d was a senior at CCM MTI last year and had a great Freshman year at Ball this year (the other senior went to Wright). She is excited that your d will be joining her! Congrats!
She was such a support and encouragement to Nat through all of this! I’m so thankful! @MTdreamz
Congratulations @mommyMT
are there no more final stories, wait list movements or final decisions? seems " light " this year, no?
On average, how many people share their stories in this thread; it’s both helpful and inspiring to learn about the different paths taken. It would also be great if there was another thread focused on “one year after” reflecting on the program after completing freshmen studies.
I keep hoping for more stories too. Reading them is interesting, helpful and fun as we enter into our year of this adventure. Congratulations to all of those who lived through this past year and are on their way. Lots of amazing outcomes in so many different paths.
@NYYFanNowMTdad I’m still waiting on some waitlists! Was told that the class was filled, but I would be kept on the waitlist in case some shifting happens, and earlier this month I heard some shifting. We’ll all officially know once schools starts!!
@Twelfthman - there are a few of those “after the first year” threads out there. Here’s one from my S’s year - I know there are others from other cohorts. There are also threads out there shedding light on journeys one or more years post-graduation (or not graduation, as the case may be).

Once this crazy journey was over, I didn’t feel compelled to tell my daughter’s story because I felt like it was her story. She did make a video for her senior project that talks about what it is like to apply for musical theatre programs. This tells her story way better than I could. Enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmDRWyBjLvc&feature=youtu.be
@azmtmom13 I just watched her video. What a great testimonial! Best of luck to her.
@azmtmom13 loved ur sweet daughter’s honesty. We to used Polish Your Passion NYC. Tom Morin is the kindest soul ever. Could not have survived the audition process without him. Bright days ahead! BFA MT process is brutal and way too costly. Maybe one day the process can get easier.
@azmtmom13 thanks for sharing- i shared w my daughter who will be applying this coming year ( class of 2024)
Okay—— I’ll share my DD’s story as I have really learned so much through reading these threads! Thank you CC MT community for your shared experiences and stories. I spent hours upon hours reading posts and gained so much insight to this whole crazy process! I’m sad I was late to find you (Oct of DD’s senior year in HS) I hadn’t planned on doing this “final” summary of my DD’s journey and decision but I found it so interesting to read back through past decision threads of others and see how truly different everyone’s path is, and it provided me HOPE and Encouragement.
Programs Applied to: CMU, Ithaca, BoCo, Shenandoah, Baldwin Wallace, Emerson, U of Michigan, Syracuse, Millikin, Temple, Marymount Manhattan College, JMU, Elon, Ball State, and CCM. Total 15. DD was aiming “high” and would consider a gap year as plan b if she weren’t admitted to one of the schools on her list. This was HER plan, not mine and I was just along for the ride (and to give rides and plane trips LOL).
Prescreens Passed 8/10: Elon, Michigan, CMU, BoCo, Emerson, Millikin, Temple, Ithaca
Rejected Prescreens: 2/10: Syracuse & Shenandoah.
Waitlisted Audition: Marymount Manhattan - sent in application by deadline but audition slots were already full. So never auditioned because a spot never opened up.
No coaches. DD filmed all her own dance and monologues by herself with a borrowed camcorder. Her voice teacher filmed her vocal selections on her iphone and my DD edited/uploaded them herself to whatever program each school required for admissions. She also did her own additional videos if asked or if it was an optional (BOCO and Elon?) I never saw any of them. When she got rejected from her 1st submission (Syracuse) I got concerned but she then passed 8 of them. Whew!
Academic Acceptance: All that required academic acceptances separate from artistic acceptance: Elon, Ball State MMC, Millikin, JMU. DD had strong academic record, and strong ACT scores. She even received some good merit scholarships.
Artistic Acceptance: (2) Millikin and Temple
Artistic Rejections: (9) Elon, CMU, Michigan, JMU, Ball State, Ithaca, Emerson, CCM, BW
Wait-listed (1): Boston Conservatory
Summer Programs: Interlochen (Summer of 2018 - prior to Senior year); Local community theatre summer 2 week intensive. (Prior to junior year)
Background: At a young age, my daughter had an affinity for music. Playing instruments came easy for her…piano, saxophone, and acoustic guitar started in 2nd/3rd/4th grades. She was 1st chair saxophone in the highest competitive band in middle school, and made top 3 chair for 2 years at district competition. She attended band camps for 4 summers. But, she gave up piano in 7th grade because she didn’t enjoy it, and only gave up saxophone/band in High School cause she was too busy & wanted to focus all her time in theatre.
DD started theatre classes in her public middle school and continued through HS. Thankfully, her high school had a very strong & active program and many talented students and great instruction. She began taking ballet (9th grade) and by 10th grade she was taking 3 dance classes a week (tap/jazz/ballet). In addition to starting dance, she began formal voice lessons in 9th grade and made the highest competitive choral group in her high school junior/senior years when space in her school schedule allowed for extra electives.
My D knew (before we did!) that she wanted to pursue MT in college. She wanted to take as many performing arts classes in HS as she could, so she took online courses in the summer to free up her schedule during the year for additional electives. Thus, she was able to take both chorus and theatre, a tech theatre class, AP music theory, and 2 credits of an advanced theatre class at another HS to round out her training. I credit HER with the foresight to make her plan early and get the most out of her high school classes. One regret I have for her is her not doing a college summer intensive program. Interlochen was awesome, and she gained so much from that experience, but only went for the summer prior to her senior year and wished we had done it earlier because she gained so much from it.
After getting 9 rejections in a row, the final 3 school decisions were 2 “yesses” and 1 WL. It was a rough 6 weeks! However, the CC board has been truly helpful as I frequently came on to experience others’ joys and unfortunate heartbreaks that were so relatable and revealing. It was nice to know that “we” were not the only ones experiencing doubt and rejection. It provided me hope when so many of you kept saying “it only takes 1” and it provided me with such joy and hope when your D’s and S’s got their acceptances. My D told me she wanted to do a Gap Year at the start of this process and I was not in agreement (didn’t tell her that). But the more I read on here about gap years and saw how difficult getting into programs were, I became convinced that it would be the right decision for her should she choose that. I’ve really not helped her other than logistically plan the travel arrangements and get her to her auditions. She researched MT programs on her own and made a list early in her junior year. There were a few schools she wanted to add in October after learning more about other programs but ran out of time and missed a few deadlines. Overall, she was pleased with her list and wouldn’t have changed anything.
Final Decision: Millikin University. MT. Go Blue!
Congratulations @3Blessings - to you and your D! I love these stories… they are all different but so many end happily. Good for your D knowing where she wanted to go and I am sure she will love her years at Millikin!
Congrats @3Blessings & thanks for sharing even in JUNE !!!
