I discussed with my mother, and she also has like another savings account which she can utilize as well to pay for the first year or two so that the 529 (with the 150k) can be more like 180-200k by the time to pay for the third and fourth year. She is also still really interested into Northeastern and sending me there despite me not being particularly interested in the global scholars.
I’m a bit worried that your mother is going to use her retirement funds in the belief Northeastern will help you find a job or your co-ops will help pay for your housing costs down the line…
Will your Nu.in semester offer the courses you need or will you be set back by a semester ?
Does your mom get to make the final decision? A whole year not on Northeastern’s campus seems unappealing to you. So can you tell your mom you just don’t want to do that program? Is she under the mistaken belief that you will somehow be offered the regular Boston location?
I would, at the very least, ask your mom to please call NEU’s financial aid office. She can discuss with them how much tuition increases will be and how parents manage payments. It is unlikely any other money will be offered. It’s a very expensive option which is going to set your parents back a lot financially, by the sounds of it. Maybe you can express to them that you are concerned about their retirement savings. Good luck.
Yeah, she will call in the next few days I have already called and they are moving my decision date to the 8th which gives me time to consider everything. The savings account I mentioned is not her retirement it is just a separate general one so no need to worry about that she just doesn’t want to spend it all in the case of my brother (7th grade) who will go to college a year after I finish. She understands that I don’t have the strongest interest in the program as well but she still thinks it’s the best with all the statistics online and talking to her friends who have children who also attended.
