Financial Aid Appeals and my share of tuition

I’m not sure you can make corrections…yet.

I think you are right, I’ve seen a lot of parents getting concerned because they made errors and have to wait for it to be accepted before they can go back and edit.

Agreed, I don’t think anyone can make corrections until Apr 1, even if they get a message that their FAFSA processed.

@kelsmom…would this be a correction OP can make (whenever corrections are allowed)…choosing widowed (if maybe she didn’t) and/or manually breaking out her piece of the 2022 return (e.g., undoing DRT transfer?)

Northeastern is looking at your assets, and saying you can afford 44k a yr, or just over 170k total, because of your assets, which include that insurance payout. Other schools may treat her better. If not, you might want to consider your in state flagship, or commuting to your local 4 yr public, or even the Assoc at comm college in one yr, start as a junior at flagship state u in fall of 25.

Look for private scholarships, which can help a bit.

It is possible that OP can correct on her own once corrections are allowed. I am not certain, since this is a new option this year. But as soon as she can access her FAFSA to make an update, she should do so.

I’ll keep checking the FAFSA to see once its accepted. Its still “in review”

It will be fine. I can definitely afford to send her someplace. It just might be the state University. She’s not going to go to community college. One of the best parts of going to college for me was moving out of my parents house and living in the dorms and exploring a new city. We have at least $80k saved and her grandparents want to help pay too, so that should make things more manageable.

I’m just going to wait and see what happens with all her other schools and then make those FAFSA changes once I am able to.

Are you open to other schools, stat depending, that she might be able to attend for $100K or less all in - likely less expensive than your in state school (depending on state) - but would be in the South or Midwest?

You might develop a plan rather than waiting it out - just in case - if that would be a possibility for you if all else fails?

But if you’re confident and willing to pay for an alternative already lined up, then it would be unnecessary.

She doesnt want to go South or midwest and TBH I would be afraid to have her living in a state that doesn’t value women’s healthcare rights.

She has a boyfriend and she wants to be in a place where she can come home for the weekend or that he can visit for a weekend. So she was really hoping someplace in Boston because she loves Boston.

So I have an exciting update.

The FAFSA was processed, but no corrections available yet. But she was accepted to GWU and yesterday she found out that she got a Tuition Exchange scholarship worth $54,000/year. So we are waiting on the official financial aid package. She doesn’t really want to go there but we are visiting this coming weekend and I hope she makes the smart decision to go here. It would bring tuition/board under $25k I think per year. Which is much better that $45k @ Northeastern.

Congrats to her.

If she wants to be in / near Boston - not sure if you said your state, but I’m guessing there are lower cost (lower profile) schools that might hit a target.

I just thought of one school and surely there’s more - but U of Southern Maine in Portland - still seems to be taking apps. Qualifies for the New England tuition given the right major but even if the major isn’t right, it’s $40K before merit. If she picks the right major, much less.

I’m sure in the RI, Mass, CT, NH, Maine type areas - Boston accessible - there will be others - if the student wants to search.

If not, GW is a wonderful option with ample flights home from DCA I’m sure or BWI with a short train ride.

It really depends on if you want to find that closer school or she wants the well know brand name school which she just achieved with GW.

What is your state of residency?

Congrats to her on GW.

With the money saved between Northeastern and GWU you could afford to pay for flights every month of the year and still have money to spare (especially since :pleading_face:odds are they won’t be together long – don’t tell her that of course )

We live in Vermont. She really wants to go to school in the city. So Maine wont really entice her. Plus she wants someplace warmer. I am hoping she really likes GWU, because there are direct flights to Burlington VT and its a lot warmer down there than here (although our winters are getting warmer and warmer every year). Her other cheaper option is the University of Vermont but we live about 10 min away and it doesn’t really feel like “going away to college” to her and I don’t blame her. I went to UVM, but grew up in Boston and I really appreciated getting away and living someplace new.

This was my thought exactly. Its actually easier to get home from DC than it is from Boston. Boston requires a 4 hour drive. DC would allow us either a direct flight or the train. I told her I’d fly her home every other month, and I’d even buy her boyfriend a few plane tickets!

GW is awesome for a kid who wants urban. I think she’ll love it! The kids we know who went there/are there are SO involved in life in DC- cultural, artistic, volunteer opportunities in the community, internships on the Hill, etc. One of my kids lived in DC for a while after graduating from college- pretty tight budget because rents are expensive, but there is SO much free stuff happening all the time (concerts on the Mall, all the Smithsonian affiliated museums are free, etc.) Such exciting news!!!

Thanks. I hope she likes it. She wants to go to law school so this would help her to not have any debt when she finishes her undergrad. Plus I’m guessing DC is a great place to be if you are interested in law. I haven’t been since I was a kid, so I am looking forward to going to. I booked nonstop flights so that she could see how quick it would be to get back and forth.

The city is chockablock with young people who want to go to law school (or study public policy, econ, work at a think tank, voting rights, education reform, etc.) Lots to love!

OK - Portland is a city. Boston isn’t warmer !! Maybe warmer than Maine.

All good - I hope she likes it too but if not, let us know and we can regroup !! And she can always find a new guy !! Well you can’t tell her that!!

Let us know after you all visit.

Congrats to her. I didn’t know about TE til I got on this website but for those who can, it sounds awesome. I know folks at Vandy - they can go anywhere and Vandy pays 70% - but there’s no qualifier - so it’s nice that other schools like GW - do honor this program!!!

well we live in Burlington VT and to us this isn’t really a city. I’ve been to Portland and sorry to say its not what I think of when I think of a city. Sorry! the thought was that Boston is warmer than Vermont and she loves Boston. Not so psyched to think about going to Maine. LOL

She could find a new guy but this one is really nice and they’ve been together 2 years.

Wow, that’s awesome about Vandebilt. We had to apply to a bunch of different places and GWU was the only one that gave her the scholarship.
