finding decent airfare

boysx3- I have looked at Dayton. It is just not any cheaper. IND is preferred since D1 would like to meet them in Indianapolis for a night.
Icedragon- I don’t have much wiggle room with the dates. These are final decision visits and she must go during her spring break which is last week in march.

Southwest flies to Manchester NH.
SW also flies to Hartford.

Look at the bright side: the cost of the flights will pale in comparison to the cost of the college.

thumper- would those airports be doable for visiting Univ of Vermont?
GladDad- thanks! She has some decent merit aid at both.

Even those discount airlines (SW, JB) just went up at least ~ $10 last week. We had gotten $39 PIT -> BOS last weekend.

It’s a LONG drive (I’m going to guess over 4 hours) from Hartford to Burlington…about the same (maybe a bit less) from Manchester.

My husband says that flying into Manchester from Indiana…is probably better to do…fly to Manchester…drive to Burlington. Spend a night there…drive back…fly back to CA from Manchester NH.

I had good luck finding flights to book for our spring break trip using Google Flights: [Flights - Google Search](http://www.google.com/flights/)

Check surrounding air ports on both ends.

Also, when are you planning on taking these trips. If they are more than a month away, you are in the period of the highest fairs. Wait until you get closer to your trip.

Look into flying into a major city and driving a bit. Chances are if you fly into Boston, NYC or even Montreal you might find a better fare. I am assuming you are renting a car no matter where you fly, correct?

Driving from NYC or Boston to Burlington would be long. Burlington is more than 200 miles from Boston. Canada is definitely closer.

I supposed if you aren’t used to longer drives, 200 miles can be an issue. I wouldn’t bat an eye at doing that though. We do a lot of day trips, leaving in the morning, coming back at night that are in the 150-200 mile range so we are used to it.

It would depend on how much time you have but the drive, especially if you are going in the fall, would be well worth it to me. If you only have 2 days to check out schools, that is different.

Is Albany,NY closer to Burlington? I’d guess so, but I haven’t looked at a map. I’m also not sure about which carriers service Albany, but it might be woth checking out.

I would suggest going to the UVM website and checking the “visit” section. It is very likely they will have information about how to travel there.

From Albany it’s about a 3 hr drive to Burlington and SW is one of the carriers. Definitely closer to Burlington than Hartford.

The closest major city to Burlington would be Montreal.

Boston - Burlington = 210 (our house to UVM)
Manchester - Burlington … about 160 miles
Concord - Burlington … about 140 miles
Montreal - Burlington … about 90 miles
(the last 3 are SWAGs)

I would suggests SW airline to EWR (Newark, NJ) and then a direct flight to Burlington. You’ll want to be careful with winter driving. We drove up once in April during a HS students SPRING break and encountered a pretty significant snowstorm along the way. If I had not been driving our SUV I would have stopped. [Cheap Flights from Newark to Burlington, from $210 Round trip from EWR to BTV](Cheap Flights from Newark to Burlington, Vermont)

You can also take Amtrak from EWR, but since there is only one train a day that goes to Burlington, that might not work.

We have friends in Burlington and they RARELY fly out of Burlington because it is so expensive. They usually drive to another airport-Boston for them because they have friends there that they can leave their car with.

I agree. Boston to Burlington is a lovely (albeit long) ride from Boston. But, an unexpected snowstorm could surely complicate things.

Southwest is great. Look into flying on different days too. One day before/after can sometimes have a much better price.

Just looked at Southwest for last week of March, midweek. Try flying from LA to Albany, then Indy, then home and vice versa.

From Albany is a good idea, just over three hours and a pretty drive, sans snow!

The other thing that’s great about Southwest is they don’t charge rebooking fees. Know when you’ll be travelling? Book it now! If prices drop in the future you just rebook using their online tool and get any difference back as a travel voucher valid for up to one year.

When my girlfriend and I were visiting my parents over the holidays I checked how much flights were one day after we had planned to fly out. It wound up being $125 cheaper per ticket to fly on Friday instead of Thursday! Between the two of us that’s $250 essentially for free. Likewise, we have a trip to Orlando for business next week, had booked our tickets two months ago, and saw the price dropped by $50 each this last week. Rebooked them and now have another $50 each in vouchers for our next flight.
