Mmm… 25 years ago, don’t recall. They said it was caffeine in liquid form, and we just put a couple of drops in a couple ounces of formula or breast milk in a bottle for her. But I am sure it had a “formal” drug name, just don’t know what it was. I was a little shell shocked at the time after H missing the delivery, week in NICU (and I was breastfeeding, so I was there a lot), my mom visiting but not helping…
About maternal instincts…total fail for me on baby 1. He slept 6 hours at a time the first few days home, and I blissfully thought he was the most exceptional baby ever. Then my SIL noticed that you could see the imprint of his hand on his belly ( he had been sleeping on his tummy on his little hand). She pointed out that he looked kinda yellow. Jaundice, 3 days in the hospital and then a couple more under the portable light box at home. Boy did he wake up and raise hell after that!
Third kid had a horrendous phlegmy cough for about 10 days that just wouldn’t quit at 11 months. I took him to urgent care 2x, and after 7-10 days it just got worse and worse. The phlegm was so thick he would gag, and his lips would turn blue during each coughing episode. I took him to the pediatrician and told him I thought it was something more serious than bronchitis, allergy cough, etc. in fact, I’d done some reading and I thought maybe it was Pertussis or Cystic Fibrosis. He patted my hand and basically said “there, there, mom. Don’t you worry it’s just a cold”. I was furious and said I wasn’t leaving until I saw his associate OR he tested for something…anything! I was desperate. He assured me that any culture he took would come back negative, but so that I could sleep better at night, he’d test for Pertussis. He said he was sure he’d be calling to give me this news in a couple days. Well, he called alright, and ate a healthy dose of crow. It WAS Pertussis. Kid was subsequently hospitalized in critical care unit and sent home with an oxygen tank for emergencies. Had he been my first child, I don’t know if I would have had the fortitude to keep insisting that something was amiss.
Geez. Good for you, shellz. “There, there, mom. Don’t you worry.” Good grief.
My first was born in England. We were living in Egypt at the time and I went home to have him. In the UK, they keep you in hospital 4 days with your first. Then a midwife came to the house every day for 10 days to check on us both. So between that and Mum and a husband who had already had 2 AND the fact that son was a very easy baby, it was pretty easy. My daughter was born in the US. Was so glad she was not my first when I went home the next day with a “see you in 6 weeks!”. (& She was a very difficult baby)
@VeryHappy I was so upset that he’s lucky I didn’t haul off and smack him, after his “there there” comment. Not too bright if he didn’t realize it’s dangerous to patronize a mama bear who is in fear for her cubs safety
