First cookbook for college kid's first apartment

I’ve got an older Joy of Cooking, but found the newest edition on sale around Christmas, and bought it for one D. Am tempted to keep it for myself, as it has the old standby instructions, in detail, as well as receipes that reflect the changing nature of eating in this country. Pad Thai and teriyaki sauce as well as how to skin a rabbit and cook a turkey. I read an older edition cover to cover as a teen, as I love the detail and affection for the cooking process that makes it still a ‘Joy’

Part of my learning to cook way back when was in the shared houses of college days. 4 to 6 roommates, we each cooked one night a week, prepared something nice for each other (a certain amount of competition was involved). These days, perhaps everyone’s too busy, and less domestically inclined.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned “Where’s Mom Now That I Need Her?” I got it when I got married and still use it. Contains a nutrition overview, how to get the best buys at the grocery store, laundry & clothing repair, simple first aid, and basic car and bike maintenence, as well as 150 pages of reasonable recipes for breakfast, sandwiches, soup, breads, beverages, salads, main dishes, veggies, cakes, cookies, desserts & candy.
