Fisher School of Business undergrad

@DG. Do not underestimate the City vs College Town setting especially when being from OOS. D18 was accepted to both of these schools with major scholarships and after visiting both, there was no comparison. She was absolutely attracted to the semi-urban setting OSU provided. The idea of having endless restaurants a short walk away from OSU as well as the malls and shopping, OSU sports, and yes a major airport within a 15-minute drive made it a no brainer for her.

My OOS S20 was also accepted to both OSU Fisher and Indiana Kelley. However, as much as he loves OSU, it might not end up as being an option due to the lack of scholarship. As much as I like Indiana for him which would also be a good fit for him, he already wrote it off by saying ā€œwhat if I do not like Kelley? Will any other degree from IU be worth the OOS money?ā€ Obviously, everyone is different. All of these schools are excellent and very similar when it comes to rankings and opportunities. But the 4-year experiences are going to be much much different. Also, OSU requires a student to live on campus for the first two years. As a parent, I liked the fact that I did not have to think much about this for the first two years.

@Boomer1964 - absolutely…thanks so much for your input…I have heard housing is a challenge for IU students after their first year…no idea if that’s indeed the case…

We are in the same boat, deciding between Fisher, Kelley and instead of Texas, Gies at UIUC. It’s complicated, since the rankings for the business schools are so different than the rankings of the universities as a whole. And then of course, rankings aren’t perfect anyway. Like you @DG we have similar scholarships and nothing from UIUC. I guess we’ll need to visit each again

@NYC2018nyc - we visited Gies. They basically implied no merit even with 35 and 4.3. It’s their state fiscal issues I think. Am from Missouri. Nice school but with no merit it isn’t meaningfully better than Kelley or Fisher. I don’t know. Tough call. I am hoping the admitted students day gives me some revelation lol. At the end of the day I think is function of city vs college town, schools pretty similar, osu sports better. I know that shouldn’t be a factor but for me it is.

For direct admit my school does not rank but i have a 4.15 wgpa and a 1270. Will that be direct admit? is there another opportunity to petition like at IU Kelley? I got into Kelley after petitioning.

I’m not sure. Kelley is very specific about what is direct and what needs a petition… The other schools leave it a bit more vague, so it’s hard to know.

Either a 1360 SAT or 30 ACT or 1230/26 w/top 20% in class. That’s the criteria for Direct.

They dont petition.

OSU is very specific on DA.

OSU offers pre-business and a GPA requirement to get into Fisher

Good article on Poets and Quants about undergrad b-school admittances… https://poetsandquantsforundergrads.com/2020/01/28/acceptance-rates-at-the-top-b-schools/?utm_campaign=Biz%20Dish&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&utm_content=82573569&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8NaPvgmdfIARe2HoUD880giUgSxP7yEbPibHeqbUTXqiTrf9-f0zxv9w-s1puVdbiBaLBHIrhmGfTy5b1mzqZkNgXMkQ&_hsmi=82573569

@DG Congratulations on your acceptances. I’m biased (BBA and MBA from UT Austin), but wow, McCombs is insanely hard to get into these days OOS, so that’s a big deal. Big school, big opportunities, huge school spirit. Those things seem to be similar between Texas and OSU. Austin is a city, state capital, and college town all rolled into one (so that would be similar as well), and was always known for its quirkiness, live music and general great atmosphere. Good luck with your decision, you have some great choices.

@rbc2018 - thanks! No merit from McCombs but you’re right, is great place it seems…waiting for UMich (deferred) although in the unlikely event i get into Ross its 300k, vs. 200 at UT, 130 at OSU and 140 at IU.

@Boomer1964 - thanks for this feedback…I visited Ohio State again for the Fisher Direct Day and I really liked it, was leaning IU but now Ohio State - Columbus is huge selling point - programs seem pretty similar and OSU’s is on the rise it seems…40 at IU vs. 29 at OSU. leaning Buckeyes…thanks!

@DG. I am glad you liked OSU. As you were able to see for yourself, there is no right or wrong between IU and OSU. Both are fantastic schools and both will provide a great education. They are just very different settings and that should make them much easier to differentiate. As of today, tOSU and Fisher still in the running for my son and probably would have been his top choice, but with the lack of scholarship and already in the month of March, it is pretty much an afterthought. It is probably coming down to the University of Georgia or the University of Florida
