Fitbit anyone?

This is a very funny article about the FitBit by David Sedaris: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/06/30/stepping-out-3

I had forgotten how funny David Sedaris is. I have never gotten past 35K steps, and that was an active vacation day. I can’t imagine 60K steps!

Must head to the library to look for one of his books.

Actually, @CT1417 - it is a school with two stories. I don’t understand it either. It is definitely a change of elevation.

I have the Fitbit Charge HR and yesterday was quite frustrating. I did 60 minutes @3mph with an elevation of 5 on the treadmill and it only tracked 915 steps. I thought maybe the problem was that I was reading a book at the same time and was holding my arm still, balancing the book. It’s the first time I’ve noticed a significant undercounting of my steps. Today is a running day (so I can’t read!), so we’ll see if there’s a similar problem. Otherwise I love it! It really motivates me to keep moving and even if I don’t make my 10,000 steps in a day, I can figure out why. I’ve managed to average 10,000/day over the week by ramping up on weekends if I don’t make my daily targets.

@runnersmom,
You’re right, that was the problem. Holding your arm still will mess up the step-tracking on the treadmill. I solver this by tucking the whole bracelet inside my bra while I walk on my treadmill. An alternative, if that’s too uncomfortable, is to remove the little tracker from the bracelet and tuck that into your bra or the cuff of your sock.

@patsmom - did you use the FitBit One before you got the bracelet one? I am curious about the appeal of the bracelet version and there seem to be far more of them than the clip on/wear in your pocket type. (FitBit & other brands.) Do you think it is the fear of loss that makes the bracelet version more appealing?

I have to have my arms moving when I walk to get my vivofit to count steps. Holding the bar on the treadmill tends not to trigger my device.

I do not like to wear bracelets. I have a Fitbit Zip that I clip on my bra. Don’t need to move my arms for it to count the steps. Funny, I forget I have it on and one day someone asked if i was OK because they saw the outline under my top and thought it was something serious.

I read a lot of posts from people who had lost the Fitbit One and figured that the bracelet was safer. I’ve gotten used to wearing it all the time and never even think about it anymore. I’d kind of like to get the new one - the Fitbit Charge - because it has a time display. I had to stop wearing my watch when I got the Fitbit because I didn’t want to wear either of those on my right arm (just felt weird).

CT- it is definitely true that both my eating and exercise change in the other location, no stairs to add many flights througout the day, different walking buddy (miss my speed walker friend) and different surface (sand vs hard surface) and also I do a much earlier walk at sunup so am hungry sooner. Yah, all in all, that place sabatoges me.

I don’t have any of them (yet!) but with the Fitbit that clips on, I am afraid I would just forget about it during the day if it were clipped to my bra or even in my pocket. If part of the reason for having one is to remind me to move during the day, it seems that one worn on the wrist would be much more effective, just because it would be more visible. I do like the flower icon on the clip-on Fitbit, though.

I wear the Vivofit and my watch on the same arm. Not lovely, but not bad.

Not too shabby for an IPO!

My fitbit recorded lots of steps today… Unfortunately, there was an ice cream stop involved. I will try harder tomorrow.

@hrh19, I heard that if you WALK AROUND while eating that ice cream cone, the calories are totally negated.

I think I’ve decided to get a fitbit. Just need to decide whether I want a clip-on version or a wrist one. Fitbit One vs Fitbit Flex…I don’t think I care about my sleep as I am fortunate enough to be a good sleeper. Pros/cons?

I have only used the clip-on version and my reason for preferring it to the wrist one is that I will not always want to wear something visible. The clip-on can attach beneath one’s clothing or sit in a pocket. When wearing white jeans during the summer months, I remove the device from its clip and just pop it in my pocket. The clip adds bulk that white jeans do not need!

Users of the wrist version will have to comment on movement tracking accuracy.

I started with the Flex and upgraded to the Charge HR. I like the Charge HR because I like that it has a watch and I like the stairs and HR function. It automatically tracks sleep and you can easily track an exercise (run,walk/yoga/tennis) by holding down the side button at the start and finish. My daughter has the Flex and has the Tory Burch bracelet that it fits into for nice occasions.

I like the One with stair counter and I prefer the clip, I don’t want it on my wrist. It shows, it does not work as well as on your body for some things- treadmill, etc., and can count misleadingly with excess arm use.

Personally, I’m happy with the free pedometer apps on the phones. It does have a way of motivating you to do a bit more than usual.
