They certainly have to be careful about the logging, figuring out when they should do it, and when they shouldn’t. Our massive, deadly landslide in Oso, is suspected to have been exacerbated by clear cutting above the slide area.

Back to Ebola:

I thought this was an interesting, informative and reasoned perspective on the topic of the Ebola patients at Emory:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2014/08/06/im-the-head-nurse-at-emory-this-is-why-we-wanted-to-bring-the-ebola-patients-to-the-u-s/

from the article:

There are tons of desease that are just as scary and there is no vaccination for them at all. One example is the disease that i realted to ebola, but is not ebola. It is stread only thru rodent droppings and nothing else. If one cleans something that contain such droppings and dust get in a air and breathed in, if the dropping happen to be from contaminated rodent, most likely person will die in 2 days. It is not as rare as one might think.
Now, is there vaccination from TB ? I do not remember. But the fact is, it is being brough into this country in a very large numbers and American citizens have been getting sick from sick who are crossing the border. Another one is cholera. The list can go on and on. Kids vacination is good, but there are whole tons of much worse diseases that we do not have vaccine, and how about allergic reactions and how about tensof thousands who get infections at the hospitals and die every year becuase the bacteria got much stronger thru mutation. Now going back to ebola from this last example. This should make anybody think very very hard about statements from docs that ebola will not spread at the hospital. Isn’t it contradicting the fact the literally tens of thousands are dying at the hospitals from the infections contaracted at the hospital? One of them was my FIL, at least he was in mid. 80s, but the last few weeks of his life were a pure torture. And it happened because he slipped and fell on the floor at the hospital and got a little skin scrape from it…and they are saying that ebola is not going to spread at the hospital, well, I want to believe it, but something tells me that it is pur BS. And another statment is complete BS - patients are brought here for treatment. By the admimssion of one more honest MD, THERE IS NO TREATMENT FOR EBOLA, none, zilch. Patients are jsut made comfortable. Another fact that very few mention si that there are superior hospitals in some rich (from oil) countire in Africa filled with docs educated here and in Europe.
I am not for and not against bringing ebola patients to this country. However, media and health proffessionals are not reporting all facts and many of them can make a big turn around in some people’s opinions. So, dig up all facts to form yours, I do not have any, and I have no desire to form mine as my opinion is very irrelelvant, I am nobody, just a tax paying citizen, not more than that, I am simply irrelevant.

What is scary about ebola is that it is a particularly nasty way to die. Your body essentially turns into-- to borrow an vivid term from Jesse Pinkman-- a raspberry slushie.

churchmusicmom - Thanks for posting that article. I agree - we care for those infected Americans because it’s the right thing to do. Donald Trump is an idiot.

There was an interesting link in that article to the case of an American woman who contracted Marburg virus (similar to Ebola) and unknowingly brought it back to this country - she was the only person known so far to have imported an Ebola-like disease to the United States uncontrolled. That’s a lot scarier, I think, than the patients at Emory:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2014/08/05/my-own-infection-is-proof-that-someone-can-easily-carry-ebola-into-the-u-s/

And to the earlier point about the virulence of these viruses - that woman in the article who had Marburg? No one else ever caught the disease from her, even though she was treated under “normal” conditions at the hospital. No one even knew she had Marburg until a year later.

There is no FDA approved treatment for Ebola. There are experimental treatments that are being tested in pre-clinical settings (e.g., in a monkey version of the disease), and one of these was given to the two Americans who were brought here - so yes, they were brought here for treatment, experimental treatment that us.

Just as I thought… Damned if you do, damned if you dont. Apparently, some not so smart talking heads out there are wondering - why do we treat two white people when thousands of poor black Africans are dying? Well, let me turn my sarcasm on and and answer with this question: why have we not tested the drug on some African villagers before giving it to the Americans? That would stir up some public outrage, wouldn’t it?

@MiamiDAP There is a vaccination for TB… In addition, these patients are being keep in a high level containment unit, similar to what the CDC itself has in its biohazard labs. It can’t escape from that room.

Also @BunsenBurner is correct, they administered an experimental serum in efforts to treat them. The doctor also received a blood transfusion from one of his patients that had survived the virus. Although, that last point brings up an interesting debate. I believe its because they have so little doses and it would be harder to control and monitor the results in an African village (just taking a stab at it).

This is why:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2014/08/06/why-do-two-white-americans-get-the-ebola-serum-while-hundreds-of-africans-die/

If the white missionaries had asked for it in the US, they probably would not have gotten it because of FDA regulations.

^^ BB, I think Pfizer tried that in the past when they tested Trovan in Nigeria for meningitis. Hint: it didn’t end well…

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t HPV only cause genital warts in men?
I know it’s effects on women can be devastating (cancer, obviously), but I didn’t think that a man could get cancer from HPV…?

Didn’t Michael Douglas say he got his throat cancer from HPV?

@iwtgte yes, men can get cancer from HPV. It can cause cancer of the penis, anus, or oropharynx (essentially throat).

@guineagirl96 Thanks. Wasn’t aware.

@guineagirl96 #46 is correct. Ebola is a biosafety level 4 hazard. That’s not getting out. Even when working in a lab (not on a person!), the ones on that high security have airlocks, the laboratories are in a separate building/controlled area, workers have positive pressure suits, ultraviolet light rooms. That thing is going nowhere.

Also, the ZMapp serum is experimental and isn’t ready for widespread usage.

Yes, I saw what happens at the CDC in the season finale of Walking Dead, season 1 ![]()

55 I LOLed.

@GMTplus7
LMAO but it is actually bio safety level 4 standard. Which probably includes zombie viruses…

“There is a vaccination for TB” - so, why people are getting sick if they are vaccinated. Then issue of TB is non-issue, correct? But why it is brought up again and again?

Per #49
HPV can cause warts in men/ women.
Or they could just be carriers.
