The Bus allows baggage that will fit under the seat or on the passenger’s lap. A soft duffle bag is an excellent choice. Despite the seemingly strict limitation, we do see fairly large bags carried on The Bus (hint: be friendly and polite, have fare ready in hand, don’t slow down boarding.)

This is a different situation from the OP - but it may work for people traveling to Hawaii. I live in Hawaii and am always on the look-out for traveling more inexpensively. What has generally worked for me over the years is to combine trips to the mainland. Last year my daughter was auditioning for college programs and we wanted to go to Chicago in February. HNL to Chicago was $1200/ticket (1 week trip). I then booked a multiple destination ticket with more stops for auditions in other states (10 day trip): HNL - Oklahoma City - Chicago - LA - HNL was 800/ticket. Sometimes just adding a few days stay in a 2nd destination (if it makes sense for you) can reduce the price of the airline ticket substantially.

“Is this the best price you think I’ll be able to obtain? $685 total (plus additional baggage fees) from Boston to Honolulu?”

That’s a great price. The best price I ever got was HNL-Washington DC (DCA) for $585 last year in August. But it is normally around $800-1,000 and you are looking at Christmas which carries a premium.

Thanks everyone. I booked Hawaii Airlines from JFK, nonstop. Roundtrip from JFK was 1155. Plus, cheap flights to/from Boston. This seemed to be the most inexpensive, and direct way to get to Hawaii.

Non-stop is great, but be sure to tell him to get up & stretch his legs often and walk up & down the aisles…it’s a long flight and sitting for that long isn’t the best…he’ll love it once he gets there!

CCC- You are SO right about that. I don’t think I could handle that long of a flight myself, but DS is 18. I will make sure to tell him he needs to walk around every once in awhile, to prevent blood clotting. Luckily (not usually) he has a rather small bladder and will need to use the bathroom often.
