I bought that Samsung counter depth refrigerator in 2012 when I gutted my kitchen. I’ve really liked it.

cb, consider the timing of when those two agents suggested the ~$720K price. I know the market where you are changes rapidly, so those suggestions from even a few months ago may now be obsolete.

Anyway, I know you will be careful about pricing it, because you’ll do your due diligence.

I prefer not to have water and ice in the door. I think it is a cleaner look without. I do like the bottom freezer style.

Is there counter space on both sides of the refrigerator or only on one side?

I abhor side-by-side fridges, and I hate ice and water through the door because of all the space it takes out of the interior. But then, I am not your target market for this kitchen. It is FAR too small for me. I’d have to get rid of at least 75% of my cooking stuff and dishes!
I do think that french door fridges, in addition to being just better, are more in these days…if you can find one at a decent price.

Something similar-looking to Sub Zero BI-30u (stainless).

Just to illustrate how personal fridges are… I hate French door fridges, and I hate side-by-sides as well. Drawer-type freezers and chests would drive me bonkers (had some at work - what a pain!). IMO, a fridge should have a single door. There is absolutely zero need for the freezer to be connected to or to be next to the fridge. The only reason is that only one compressor is needed, but then the cold air travels between the freezer and the fridge unit, which creates a new bunch of issues. Rant over. :)

Scored at the Sears Outlet Scratch and Dent

I swung by the local Sears Outlet because they usually have a lot of appliances and I can find a deal if I search hard. I was able to get entire package of refrigerator, slide in gas range and dishwasher!

They had a Kitchen Aid Architect Series 30" slide in gas range. It doesn’t have the 5th burner like the Samsung and the oven seems to be smaller (have no idea why), but it does have a really cool three tier fancy burner, rapid boil burner, self cleaning, convection and the warming drawer. It was new, returned out of box. Not a scratch on it and it had all of the accessories which are usually missing… the meat thermometer temp probe, etc. $1,320 less 10% discount !!!

http://www.kitchenaid.com/shop/-[KGSS907SSS]-402238/KGSS907SSS/

Then they had 45% off dishwashers. I found a top of the line Kitchen Aid, still new in box in the back. Ultra quiet, stainless steel interior, extra spray arms, etc $550!!

http://www.kitchenaid.com/shop/major-appliances-1/dishwashers-2/dishwashers-3/-[KDTE404DSS]-406924/KDTE404DSS/

That left the refrigerator. They only had about 7 counter depth refrigerators in stock. There was one Kitchen Aid that wasn’t completely dented for about $1,800. Pricing for French door counter depth refrigerators are way too high for my budget. But there was a Kenmore Elite that only had two dents on the sides (who cares about the sides!!) that was very nice and had an interesting feature - air filter for entire refrigerator, the usual water filter, but also filters inside the crisper drawers to keep veggies and fruits longer. Not sure if it really works. I especially liked the low profile curved handles that will not stick out too far. Since these have not been delivered yet, I might search a little bit to see if I can find something better, but I really liked the looks. Only $1,482.

http://www.sears.com/kenmore-elite-24.5-cu-ft-counter-depth-side/p-04641163000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1

Delivery up to kitchen and installed (except dishwasher)- Priceless !!! $82.00

Total with delivery and basic installation, before taxes about $3,220 and I’m all done

There is landing space countertop to the left of the refrigerator. And across on the other countertop to the left of the stove. Because it is a side by side, someone will probably use the space across from the refrigerator. I just thought about it… I never use the space to left or right of my frig for loading or landing, I use the counter across from the refrigerator.

Wow, lots of negative comments about the ice maker in the fridge. Seems like there is a design flaw.

cb, I’m dazzled!

Add me to the list of people who don’t want the water/ice dispenser in the freezer door. Takes up too much space and it’s another thing that can break.

Oh dang, I never read the reviews. I better search to see if I can find another refrigerator. But honestly… I doubt if any buyer is going to notice but I really do not want to own ice maker or leaking issues!

Pul-eeze: No buyer is going to turn down your house because of poor reviews on the fridge!! However, if you don’t want to stick your buyer with a crappy fridge, then maybe you should get something else.

No one will be researching the fridge, but there are multiple complaints about water leaking out onto the floor. That is a hassle that is not needed when trying to sell the house.

It’s not clear what cb’s obligation is after the sale, other than turn over warranty information (would the warranty even carry over to the next owner? Many times they only apply to the original owner). But it seems like a headache waiting to happen.

I think I’ll just swing by every couple of days to see if something better comes into stock before delivery on Oct 24

Leaking water seems like a hassle you don’t need…so keep checking, and hopefully something else will be in stock. If not, will a warranty cover any repairs (hoping none will be needed, but just in case).

The appliances from the outlet carry the one year manufacturer warranty, which they assured me will carry to the new owner. So, at least they will be under warranty but there’s always an issue.

All appliance warranties start on the date of purchase (some will start on date of delivery). Of course, it will be about 4-6 weeks before these are actually installed and tested. Then it will be possibly another 6-8 weeks before there is a new owner. That new owner loses about 3 months of their warranty while they are sitting in this house.

So, if you are remodeling a kitchen there’s always an urge to hurry up and select/purchase your appliances. Unfortunately you lose months of warranty while it is stored somewhere waiting to get installed. I always try to stall the delivery as long as possible so that the warranty doesn’t start.

Going back to VerryHappy’s post 712… don’t leave the oven door ajar to cool it down (& shut the fan off) quicker. I learned this the hard way by prematurely frying the logic board on our Dacor convection oven. You don’t want that much heat going out by all the electronics.

Back to the flip, coralbrook I’m also in San Diego and enjoy following your adventures. Well done!

cb - I think you did a decent job on getting the Sears appliances. (Personally I love having water/ice on the door, especially with so much emphasis on drinking enough water. I also like side-by-side. It seems like a good idea for a small kitchen.)

@BunsenBurner In my dream kitchen I would have a completely separate fridge and freezer in the kitchen. My sister once had a huge SubZero two door fridge in the kitchen with a standing freezer in the adjacent pantry. That was a great old kitchen in what can only be described as a mansion. (Around 24,000 sq ft, IIRC) It also had a huge butler’s pantry with sinks and dishwasher and warming ovens and enough room to store vast quantities of china. Sigh.

I have a separate freezer in the basement, and a second small fridge in another room. That helps. :)

CB, great score on the KitchenAid appliances! The range is quite superior to the other two you were considering, if it is similar to some of the KitchenAid units I’ve looked at.

Yes, awesome deal on the range and DW. Plus, KitchenAid will bring out more warm fuzzies in the buyers than Samsung will. :)

Sigh, Consolation! My dream kitchen would have the same set up as the fridge/freezer setup you described, except they would be made by Miele. I can settle for a single refrigerator column. :)
