Flip This House #5

Oh Marilyn, I hate all of those. How tough it must be for CB to try to choose a crowd pleaser.

P. S. Don’t ever order anything from homedecorators.com. I once waited more than a year for a lazy Susan. They are not trustworthy!

I’d avoid anything with an attached backsplash.

Remember the dark vanity in the last house had to be painted to make it lighter.

@thumper1, I so agree about the raised vanities…I just don’t need yet another place to clean. We’ll be doing a bath remodel fairly soon and that is already on my don’t list.

@coralbrook, anyone with a brain will appreciate the French drain work!

Regarding french drain…

The reason we are putting in french drains in the front of the yard is to re direct all water in front into a drain system so that nothing goes down the slope. This is to avoid any further erosion in the SW corner of the yard where the slope is grooved out from runoff.

The reason we are building a lot of french drains around the house perimeter is because the foundation is original 1937 and some areas of the concrete are ‘spalling (flaking)’ due to moisture getting into the concrete stem walls. The Soil Engineer did an informal foundation inspection for me and he said we needed to keep all moisture away from the house to prolong the life of the old concrete stem walls. Unfortunately, my gut told me I had to do the right thing while we were laying drain pipes everywhere. In addition, I have to put gutters around the whole house and I hope it doesn’t ruin the architecture of the cute eaves. Can guarantee it is not something a quick flipper would do.

I recently looked for replacement bathroom vanities…and was very surprised that most of them had these legs…which I do not want. So I bought nothing new.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the color CB posted for that vanity.

@thumper1 They show the vanities with the legs because they ‘open up your space.’ Not that I care. I do care about cleaning under there. I ordered optional toe kicks to cover that up.

The majority of vanities in the marketplace have legs now because the ‘furniture’ look is more stylish, and they open the space visually. It’s very difficult to find anything else that has any style and doesn’t look like a bunch of kitchen cabinets stuck in the bathroom

I honestly would go with a more neutral color for the vanity. As someone who can’t stand even a hint of green, I would walk away from a house with a greenish vanity…because I would be left to repaint it…or replace it. For over a million dollars, I wouldn’t do that.

I also agree with others…what is the “feel” of this house. That sea whatever vanity looks more beach house to me, especially in that color.

CB, my Mr. could not give a rat’s gluteus maximus about bathroom vanities, but French drainage you are putting in would blow his socks off and he would want that house.

Legged vanities and vessel sinks are cute until you need to clean the bathroom…

H and now my nephew in law would really care about the French drain, especially as NIL had to have one installed as mud would collect in his patio after heavy rains. My BIL would also be impressed with French drains and knows about them as well. Others will note that mud doesn’t collect after heavy rains the way it would in homes w/o appropriate drainage.

Agree with not liking the floating/legged vanities - I remember this same discussion in Flip #4! The 72" vanity we got for our own house comes in 48" but possibly isn’t the right look for this house’s style. (We got the stone top.) But no cleaning issues and lots of drawer space; I am very happy with it. http://www.amazon.com/Design-Element-Integrated-Drop-In-Countertop/dp/B0049S5WT8 Home Depot also carries for a bit more.

Let the cleaning service deal with it.

Not reach enough to have someone come to wipe down the sinks every morning and night.

Another weird sink cleaning issue - my BIL has trendy sinks that are a circle where the side goes straight down and meets the bottom at a 90 degree angle. Water does drain but not nearly as well as the traditional sink shape that is at least slightly funnel-shaped.

I would love French drains. I’m the kind of nerd that walks around the house when it’s raining hard to see where all the water goes!

My DH would look at things like having French drains, and how the house is wired. And he does basements.

I look for color, where the Christmas tree can go,without moving furniture, and closets and cabinets.

I like the leg look, but I want it to be high enough to easily run a dust mop under it.

I think that this kind of sink would look great, but of course it requires room for storage elsewhere:
