Flip This House #5

Starting to Shop!

I know it might seem early, but it’s never too early to start shopping for critical design elements!! I have started looking for the statement hanging chandelier for the living room. The room will have white walls, deep brown windows/trim and the pine natural ceilings. Large white plaster fireplace with white built ins on each side. Currently there is red brick on floor as hearth, still debating whether to keep it or not… need to wait until fireplace surround and built ins are exposed with the oak peg floors.

Room size requires a tall chandelier, but not necessarily super wide

Fancy Range

For this home I need to spend some money and put in a 36" range with oven that looks good. I’m not going to spend mega money… just enough that the range will work for the style of the house and kitchen. Kitchen will have white and/or grey cabinets in a slightly more traditional style. Haven’t thought much more about kitchen design, but need to figure out the range because we are running gas lines and electric to stove area now.

Dual Fuel? I think yes… although it costs more and I not matter or be noticeable to buyer
Self Cleaning? Yes, yes… but I’m finding that the true high BTU professional looking stoves don’t have self cleaning feature. What’s up with that??
5 or 6 burners Yes
Griddle feature - I don’t really care. They can buy a griddle cover later if they want

Another thing that I’m seeing with these professional stoves is that they stay away from a lot of digital display. This means that it doesn’t show the oven temp on any display anywhere which seems crazy to me.

I love smooth flat cooking surfaces instead of burners you have to clean individually. We have had it for about a decade and I will never go back to electric coil stoves.
We don’t have a grill on our stove, but I know many who do who like that feature. We just have electric because otherwise we’d have to have our own large gas tank.

Gas ranges are a requirement in this neighborhood for buyers. But dual fuel ranges have gas cooktop and an electric oven for temperature consistency.

If I had to do electric somewhere that I lived I would get an induction cooktop. Used one in Europe and it was incredible.

Induction cooktops are awesome, but some of the older models were noisy. I am not a fan of gas ovens. Electric ovens have so many incredible cooking options. With gas, you are pretty much stuck with the bake mode. But give me a gas cooktop any day of the week!

I bought a higher-end spec house about a year ago and it has a Bertazzoni range. It looks really great, and I’ve been happy with the performance. I think it looks way more expensive than it probably was. It definitely contributed to an overall high-end vibe in the house.

Given the beautiful wood elements of the house, I’d stay away from the beaded chandelier you posted and instead go with one of the other two or something similar. I think something understated and not trendy is a better choice for this house. Maybe even something with styling similar to this one, if the dimensions are right:

I like the one @zipyourlips posted. My second choice would be the weathered one (your top link).

I agree…the beads don’t work.

I think the 8 light chandelier would have the most universal appeal, but just my opinion. Agree with the others about marking the beaded one off the list of possibilities.

Thank you for personal review of the Bertazzoni range. I’ve been looking closely at that brand. Does it have self cleaning? If not, did it matter to you when you were looking at houses and making decisions?

Been a homeowner for 20+ years. I never, ever used the self-clean feature on any of my ovens. I just wipe it well after baking and make sure the turkey pan is deep enough to catch any drippings. I would not even consider the feature at all!

Have rarely ever used the self cleaning feature as well in my decades of home owning and renting.

Most ovens have a self cleaning cycle but it’s risky to use it. The temps get so high that it can break the control part of the oven!

I was more impressed with the super low cycles that some ovens have like dehydrate and bread proof. Mine even has a foolproof turkey thingy that I will never use. It’s Electrolux.

You should get a range hood that has a swoop that matches your fireplace.

Dual fuel is great. If too expensive, then gas/gas is the next preference, for the sake of the gas burners. My mother has a Bosch gas range that is very nice, and has convection. Not as much money as Wolf or the like. I like and use self-cleaning, but if I had to pick between self-cleaning and gas range, I’d always pick the gas. Bertazzoni is a brand that has a rep for looking nice but not delivering quite as well on performance than some others, but those are very, very expensive. Nevertheless, it is a good brand. Are you looking for a freestanding range? I’d look at American Range, 5 Star, and Wolfe (expensive, but a lot better than Viking, which is considered unreliable). This level of dual fuel is just incredibly expensive.

Can you do a separate wall oven and cooktop? I prefer that set up. I have a friend who has a badly designed range. I think the thermostat is just located in a place where it gets exposed to too much heat.

Don’t know if it has self-cleaning!! Have never used self-cleaning; not something I have ever considered. I feel I am typical of your target audience; very concerned with aesthetics; a sophisticated but more aspirational than consistent cook. For me, the Bertazzoni is great. My sister is a very accomplished cook and has been impressed with my set up. Her Wolf has been very finicky and has required many repairs and replacements at probably three times the price.

Well, I use the self-cleaning feature every month or two. I have a double oven, and I generally use one for baking – and that rarely needs cleaning – and the other one for broiling. I find that one needs cleaning frequently or else I have mini-fires while I’m broiling. We use the charcoal grill when the weather is decent, but during the winter I broil in my oven.

But I certainly wouldn’t walk away from an otherwise wonderful house just because it didn’t have the self-cleaning feature.

Of the three chandeleirs you posted, I like the third one the best. The first one is larger than the third, and might be a better size, but looks too dainty in my opinion. But I like the one zipyourlips post d even better. I think the style works well with the look of the room.

I have room for separate wall oven but it is across the room. However, if I’m going to spend for pro style range, the whole freestanding range has the ‘look’ people want. The 36" wide unit is very impressive. Also, total cost of fancy cooktop and separate oven and microwave might be too much.
