Flip This House CC Remodel

My current home has flooring under the cabinets, at least it did under the island. BunsenBurner is right about having a pro to keep things moving. I replaced an island and whilst the looking and shopping and deciding took a bit of time, once I ordered and paid for the appliances, it was still 7 months before everything was finished. Just because the guys are so busy and even when you have things scheduled back to back to back with install, once one person screws up and forces a delay, you cannot ever get back to that tight schedule.

Amazing and lovely work, as always!

That flooring is beautiful!

Link to photos again, please!

Somemom - the funny thing is that the neighbors are building from scratch. But their builder is not in a huge hurry it seems to have his subs finish their jobs.

They put flooring under the cabinets here too. I looked online and it looks like it may depend on the type of subfloor. I hope CB can explain more.

@anxiousmom, this is the link I’m using:

Love the flooring!

The floors look great!

It is always a 50/50 regarding floors under cabinets or after cabinets. A key issue for me is trying to save the floors from damage while doing kitchen and appliance install. And there is about 60 to 80 sq ft under cabinets which is about $300 to $400 for materials and labor installed.

Ive talked to many carpenters and contractors about which they prefer. One key issue is if you want to change flooring in the future it is very difficult to cut it out from below the cabinets. It is extremely rare that someone is going to change out all their kitchen cabinets and layout without changing the flooring at same time, but there is a chance that someone wants to change flooring without replacing cabinets.

Since my guy charges $x per sq ft no matter what, i just have him cut around the cabinets for lower cost.

And there is one niggly issue always in the back of my mind because it has happened before. I stand dishwashers and all cabinets on top of plywood dame height as flooring. If there is a small dishwasher or sink leak you have a chance that it can be isolated to the plywood underneath and not spread through all the flooring. Very slim chance:)

The previous owners of our house put down tile and didn’t put it under the dishwasher. While you couldn’t see the subflooring at the time, every dishwasher we’ve installed since sits about 2"away from where the tile ends. Ugh.

The floors make me happy

CB’s guys have been here every single work day as promised! When the flooring sub guy didn’t show up on Monday, it didn’t phase me as I think that was the only day out of the last 16 weeks that there was a no-show. From all the horror stories I’ve heard about building, could this be a remodeling record?? Of course her crew was here working diligently away.

I love the flooring! Everything about the project looks wonderful. So exciting!

Looking great!

Flooring and Kitchen Done

Yesterday I pronounced the kitchen done and turned it over to the owners to start using. Happy day! However, we still have some important things to finish in the kitchen that are holding up some of the installations. We have to select a kittchen backsplash tile because we cannot install the range hood until it is tiled up behind the stove. Dfin is struggling with the tile selection because we don’t have enough samples here to make a good decision and the tile really needs to add some dimension, color and character to the kitchen. The kitchen is looking bland at this point.

Also, we cannot install the panels onto the refrigerator until the cabinet handles are selected. Dfin is trying to decide between black handles and/or maybe a champagne color. The powder room is going to have champagne faucet and fixtures and sconces (like a light brushed gold color) It might make a beautiful statement to have brushed gold cabinet handles also.

Not to mention we haven’t finalized the kitchen pendants which will make another design statement into the kitchen.

Floors complete except for stairs. Dfin and H decided to bring the floors through to their bedroom hallway attached to the back family room and it was a very wise decision. We have installed beautiful double doors to the hallway, but we all know they will be open most of the time. So the hallway becomes part of the back family room. It would have looked really chopped up to have a transition to carpet right at that doorway. Now it really makes everything look large and continuous

Another design decision that is hard for Dfin right now is whether to install a different flooring on the raised entry area, or set the flooring in a crosswise pattern. There is a slight safety issue since guests need to be able to see that there is a small step down into the living room (left) and dining room (right). I recommended setting the flooring running opposite direction and putting the stair nose in a darker color so there is a distinct line at the edge of the raised area. But, she would like to have some kind of design element in the entryway such as a tile pattern or herringbone. We cannot cut the existing flooring in a herringone because it wouldn’t have a good tongue and groove to set the pattern and there would be a lot of ‘cut’ ends visible.

Don’t do herringbone. How about a board in contrasting color that outlines the contour of the step and an inlay of some sort in the middle? Would this flooring allow for that?

The specifics are that the flooring and the matching stair nose are 1/2" plus about 1/16 for underlayment which is 9/16. We could do a tile inlay with tile at 6/16 plus thinset. The tile would have to be shimmed up a tad which is doable

I had the same thought, something bright red, turquoise or whatever matches the color theme. I used small iridescent tiles around pool.

The house is looking wonderful! What a lovely transformation.

Re: cabinet pulls for the kitchen, one of my all-time favorite kitchens used these brushed bronze (champagne gold color) pulls. I ended up using the same pulls in satin nickel, though I’ve always kind of regretted I didn’t “go for the gold.” I like the fairly clean lines and especially appreciate that, since there is a large gap between the cabinetry and the inside of the pull, the drawer/cabinet fronts stay clean. Your fingers don’t touch the wood. And there are no hard corners to bump into or to snag anything.

Those brushed bronze pulls are gorgeous but might be a tad ‘traditional’ for Dfins style. She tends to lean more contemporary
