I can’t believe such a policy would survive legal review.
My daughter could miss no classes for her Latin class. She went sick if she had to. Professors who make those policies are asking for a germy classroom.
They’re asking for a legal challenge, too.
My kids grandfather died while they were both in college. He was a very important part of their lives. Both were in the midterms week. It was unbelievable how difficult some professors made this on them. There were a couple whose response to their requests could easily be seen as threatening. Threatening their academic future. Then there were those who did not even respond to their emails and request. They came to the funeral and eventually it worked out okay.
This wasn’t a problem when I was in college. There was a reasonable standard.
That said, this new hardline is probably related to the current state of ‘everyone is special, everyone has an excuse and everyone is an exception’.
Probably because dying grandparent is the most common excuse! My kid is prof now and hears them all and comments on how different it is from the other side!
For those of your with coughs, I had my first night in a week where I was not awakened with uncontrollable coughing lasting for 2 hours, I awoke, but a drink or a cough drop took care of it. The best thing that is working for my cough tickle, when it gets really bad, is a popsicle or ice cube against that spot, I freeze that tickle away. Not that it works incredibly well, obviously, but it takes it down a few notches so I can stop for a few minutes.
Uh oh. My nose is running like a faucet today. I feel fine otherwise and got my shot (and haven’t skipped my allergy meds). Probably a cold… but hope it just goes away.
Awful cough here as well. DH has been sleeping in the man cave because I keep him up all night if he doesn’t.
Delsym works for a little while, then wears off. This is exhausting.
The only thing that works for us when we have bad coughs that interfere with sleep is cough medicine with codeine. Our docs always remind us we can’t heal if we done sleep, so we take it.
Codeine makes me queasy, I’d rather cough
Has anyone seen a statistic of what percentage of those who have died from the flu had a flu shot? Several who were mentioned on the news did not.
Woke up in the middle of the night feeling congested and with a sore throat. Sure hoping it’s just a cold.
Looks like flu feels like flu but not flu just incase anyone has andenovirus not a flu virus

My SIL works at a nursing home. They’ve taken every realistic precaution possible but over the weekend they confirmed 2 cases of the flu and have another half dozen suspected.
@Iglooo I wonder if that’s what my kids have - adenovirus. A week ago my younger son had horrible headache, bad cough and a mild fever (highest it went was 100.4). Normally I would have let it run its course without going to the doctor but he was scheduled to go on nonrefundable school ski trip days later. Hearing the horror stories on the news about sudden onset of deadly flu symptoms, I was worried I’d send him only to have him get much sicker, so I took him to our pediatrician for a flu test. Test came back negative and with her giving the OK for him to go if he felt up to it, I let him go a couple days later (he still had cough, but no fever or other symptoms at that point).
Then yesterday my older son woke up with same exact symptoms. He’s currently home with the terrible headache, cough and low grade fever. But, the flu has apparently hit his school b/c two of my friends texted me yesterday to say their daughters (classmates of older ds) both tested positive yesterday for flu. I wonder how many others are out sick today.
I wonder how accurate the flu tests really are. During the swine flu epidemic my husband, daughter and I all had the exact same symptoms and two tested positive and one tested negative. I have no doubt that we all had the same illness.
Came down to visit my dad and he announced that he’d had Flu A ten days before I arrived. Do ya think he could have bothered to tell me?!?!?!
During the swine flu epidemic, immuno flu tests were very unreliable. Molecular tests that check for the presence of certain viral genetic code have gained traction since then, and they are more reliable.
@BunsenBurner Thank you for clarifying that!
And now, since the flu is over, I have a cold.
I’ve noticed that people have stopped shaking hands around our local medical center. The hospital is filled with flu patients and some surgeries are being postponed due to lack of space. No kids are allowed to visit either.
