Food Products That Brand Matters

I am a cheese snob. If I am buying cheese that is not shredded then I am only buying specialty brands. No Kraft or store brand. Min 1 year aged cheddar preferably 3+ years aged.

This is a must for me! And it can be hard to find. I’ve tried oat/coconut/almond based creamers and they all fall short for me.

We prefer European products: Spanish cheeses, including Manchego, French brie, mozzarella bufala, french feta Valbreso from Costco. Illy coffee beans from Amazon, Lindor chocolate bonbons.

I tried buying Costco TP, and my husband noticed right away.
I wouldn’t even try to use it for my son. He’s a kid who took 2 ply with him to college, because he hated the college’s single ply.

Costco is 2 ply

But everyone has preferences.

Except no one (I think) likes the Scott’s single ply

Meaning the rolls with 1000 sheets each?

Even if you make two-ply using twice as much, that still gives more per roll than many other brands with far fewer than 500 sheets per roll.

Except me who posted I like it a few posts above

Do you know it’s really easy to make your own refills?

1/4 cup original blue Dawn
1/8 cup rubbing alcohol
1 1/2 c .water to fill container.

It costs just pennies compared to buying the Dawn refills.

That reminded me of a college. On our floor was a girl who seemed rather “easy” (there was a story about her showering with her roommate’s boyfriend when roommate went home for a long weekend). My friends and I referred to her as Bounty… the quicker picker upper.

Definitely Bounty paper towels. Toulet paper, napkins and tissue- any brand .

Shrinkflation is real, but I am not aware of it occurring for Tillamook ice cream, as there are standardized sizes, that are shared among all the major brands. Tillamook uses 1.5 quart = 48 oz, as does Breyers, Dreyers, and every other brand sold at my supermarket using the larger size.

However, “premium” ice creams, like Haggen-Dazs. often use a smaller size 1 pint size, and a few “premium” ice creams have changed that smaller 1 pint size to non-standard measurements. Haggen-Dazs are often 14 oz now – not 1 pint = 16 oz. Ben & Jerry’s and others stil use the standard 1 pint = 16 oz.

Regarding Tillamook flavors, some of the ones I like more and less are below:

Best

  • German Chocolate Cake
  • Marionberry Pie
  • Monster Cookie
  • Tillamook Mudslide

Okay, I Prefer Other Brands For This Flavor

  • Chocolate Chip / Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
  • Cookies & Cream
  • Strawberry
  • Chocolate Hazlenut
  • Vanilla (all variations)

Worst

  • Campfire Peanut Butter Cup – Probably the worst peanut butter cup ice cream I’ve ever had. It’s listed as “limited edition”, but has remained in stores for many months.
  • Banana Split – I no longer see the flavor on the website. Hopefully it’s been discontinued. This was truly awful.
  • Malted Moo Shake – I’m personally not a fan of the flavor, but it has a loyal fanbase. Many seem to like it.

Written down–I’ll be trying this out!

Regarding Costco Kirkland toilet paper, I buy the Kirkland “Ultra Soft.” I think that originally there was only one Kirkland brand TP, but somewhere along the line they created two versions, one of which is cheaper and 1-ply and the other (“Ultra Soft”) is a little more expensive and 2-ply.

I am a Vanilla Malt fan so this one hits the spot. DH loves it too. S24 is not a fan. So what are the go to brands for those OK flavors.

I don’t love chocolate ice cream, but love B&Js Phish Food. Again, it’s the smooth rich texture that does it for me.

Brands that make a difference to me:

Tillamook cheeses
Daisy sour cream
Califia almond milk
Bonne Maman jams
Chips Ahoy for over the counter chocolate chip cookies
Pepperidge Farms other over the counter cookies

That’s about it. I shop a lot at Trader Joe’s. Some labels I recognize the disguised brands, others I don’t. I do like their organic mayo.
