For current Asian students or prospective asian students

okay so first of all I’m not Asian, but as a current Rice student I think I can offer you a little perspective on life here…because of the residential college system, there’s a TON of interaction between people of various races. I’d say most if not all of the Asians I know freely interact with everyone else. Many of them participate in things like the South Asian Society, which is open to people of all races–there’s very little exclusivity or cliqueish behavior.

The one difficulty some international Asian students deal with is the language barrier, which can make it hard to make friends sometimes. However, there are always other international students and resources available, so after a few weeks to get acclimated, usually I don’t see a problem.

I think the extent to which you want to hang out with only Asians vs. people of other races is completely up to you…there’s no pressure here to do either.
