For fun…Do you eBay? What’s the best deal or most fun…

H buys on eBay occasionally, and he is very careful after getting scammed in the very early days. He surprised me yesterday with a replacement for my 41 year old microwave steamer that was a wedding present. I love it, and I was using it even though it was cracked. The replacement is used, but looks new.

Thank you. I was so amazed to see these cardigans for sale. I have some others from way back in the day, that I loved as they looked great and were such good quality. I’ve recently lost weight and was able to wear one the other day, but I saw that the sleeves are on their way to becoming frayed. I had an idea to check eBay, and to my delight, found two that looked good. I went ahead and ordered them. Will see what happens!

Fingers crossed!

I’ve bought some Jimmy Choo flats from an eBay seller with great reviews. Authentic per my inspection of what I received  My husband has been buying lab equipment off eBay with no issues. He does a lot of research before buying.

I have been slowly selling the contents of dead relatives china cabinets and hutches. Once you get skilled identifying pieces it goes much faster! There was a partial set of Limoges (very Victorian looking, an old and apparently valuable pattern which NEVER goes on sale, even Replacements has a blank photo for the pattern) which I boxed and shipped to Alaska (I looked up the town on Googlemaps… some remote, rural, snowy place) and I laugh every time I think of that person drinking tea out of valuable, gold trimmed Limoges teacups!

I don’t spilt the proceeds with anyone. My siblings, cousins, i.e. anyone else who has claim to the stuff thinks I’m crazy for bothering with it. I have offered to split the profits (heck it’s all profit, it was sitting in my parents garage when we sold their house) but everyone is afraid that means I’ll expect them to start hoarding bubble wrap and sturdy boxes!

It’s a benign hobby for sure and it’s helping with my de-cluttering goals. The cash is the bonus!!! I just need to remind myself that I can’t sell a couple of Wedgwood cake plates and then take the proceeds to buy MORE cake plates (which I would totally have done when I was younger).

Found a game for my sister that she and I used to play growing up. We’d spent a lot of time complaining that our mom had gotten rid of it. I found it and gave it to her for Christmas. We had fun playing it and introduced my kids to it. It was great!

I eBay a fair amount. I collect sterling silver, especially Georgian silver. I have bought a number of items. I haven’t had any problem. I pretty much know what I am buying, and so I haven’t had any problems.

I also buy needlepoint items. I buy canvases and thread. The nearest needlepoint store to me is 2 1/2 hours away. I have accumulated a fairly extensive stash, so I am able to start pieces without going so far away.

You can usually get a good price on most items. However, there are some sellers who think that their items are really special and are too expensive. They usually languish.

We started buying and selling on eBay in 1999!!! It was so different back then. We had to get film developed and scan the pictures to be uploaded.

It was mostly H buying and selling. He’s a toy and comic collector. But I had to do most of the computer stuff for him. Sometime around 2015 it got easy enough that he could completely do it on his own.

We haven’t done much selling in the last few years, which is good because VA is one of the states that a few years ago lowered the threshold for reporting to the IRS to $600. Otherwise it was $20K and 200 items. A couple of years we weren’t too far away from that, especially with the 200 items.

As far as buying from someone’s we definitely look at feedback and number of items sold. And good luck to you!

This Christmas I bought 8 metal disc activated heat packs from one seller and had her mail them to 8 different addresses. She had lots of sales and 100% (or close) positive rating. One of the items didn’t arrive so she resent and filed a claim with usps.

If you do your due diligence and stick with sellers who have sold a lot of items and have positive ratings, it seems to work pretty well.

I mostly buy Christmas Stocking kits (cross stitch, embroidery). I have more than I will ever finish in my lifetime.

My brother has bought cars off ebay, from far away too (Canada). He recently bought a new car and I’m not sure it was ebay or FB marketplace; it was local.

I also bought the Fox Experiment, as it was cheaper on ebay than anywhere else and even arrived before Christmas, yay! It’s a newly released game by makers of Wingspan. It’s still in shrink wrap but appears to be in perfect condition from the outside.

I posted earlier in this thread on how I was scammed on eBay. The seller had positive feedback. How does one know that the feedback isn’t just a scam?

I guess you don’t really. But if they have thousands of feedback, then it would probably be harder to fake? I would be cautious buying someone $$$ if they didn’t have a lot of feedback. At least hundreds.

I think eBay has good buyer protection services? Usually favors the buyer I thought. It’s been awhile (years) since we’ve had anything happen, and it’s never been anything that major.

It’s been a few years since I was scammed and eBay did nothing. I did notice that the seller was banned from eBay a few days later. I think he/she did the same thing to other people. I got my money back because I paid with an AMEX card. As a result, I’m reluctant to use eBay–"once burned, twice shy . . "

I still buy, and not as frequently sell, on Ebay - I’ve had good success in both. It used to be my go to site whenever I’d be looking for a good deal, it isn’t the same these days. Recently I sold some unused supplements that were expensive but that I no longer take, they were still fresh with at least a year to expiration. So I listed them, not really expecting to sell them, and ready to put them up on the Buy Nothing page I belong to. Surprisingly, I sold both lots in 3 days.

Like everywhere, you do need to be a bit of a detective to shop on the site, sort for lower pricing, read, and re-read feedback, search the internet for lower pricing, etc. but it can be a great resource for out of print, or hard to find items.

I’ve been selling on Mercari which is similar but not as popular. I was listing on both but then got lazy and just went with Mercari. I’ve made almost $1000 since last May selling my 3 sons’ old toys, games, etc. as I’ve been clearing out their rooms and our attic. Lego minifigures have been the most lucrative as last summer I hit a high demand time for one type - Lego Castle tr olls, knights, etc.- which one of my sons had numerous sets of. The Lego sets themselves are a jumbled mess of many sets combined so I’ve just sold the minifigures, with my sons’ blessing and I’ve saved a few of each one’s favorites for them. I enjoy it or I wouldn’t do it because it is time consuming, but I’m retired. I’m almost out of things to sell finally. They’ve suggested I buy more at thrift stores and garage sales to sell but I have no interest in doing that, especially trying to figure out how to make a profit.

I forgot all about this until I started reading this thread. It happened years ago now -

I’ve apparently been banned from ebay, for doing something unbecoming of an eBay user. Problem is, I’ve never purchased or sold anything on ebay.

I tried to get it cleared up, but it was near impossible to contact a real person. I never got it resolved.

The curiosity is getting the best of me!

I’ve only known folks to be banned when buying or selling -
