For osteoporosis, which type of specialist would you see?

One problem with doing a baseline bone scan at 30 is the cost – insurance wouldn’t cover it. In hindsight, I wish I had done a baseline – probably not at 30, more likely at 40 or 45. A friend of mine did that – she was normal before menopause, but jumped to osteoporosis levels after menopause.

The bigger problem, I think, is that doctors would just diagnose you with early onset osteoporosis. On the National Osteoporosis Foundation forums, there frequently are people posting that they were just diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia at age 19, 25, 35, etc. Their doctors don’t seem to respond with --" maybe that’s your normal" – but instead start recommending medication. I really wonder how much research has been done on this.
