For the '10s: What did you send to college with your child that was never used?

This has been said before, but some dorms won’t allow any type of coffee makers. Check before buying.

I do know the Keurig has a small insert that can handle regular coffee–sort of like a small filter. What is helpful about those, it the one cup and go…no chance of leaving a pot on (or having the timer not shut it off properly)…and cheaper than boutique coffee shops
Will check re school policy…

^I think it’s called the my-k cup or something. I’ve been meaning to get one of those once I picked a brew I like, at the moment I am still trying out a few.

I got a keurig for christmas and I really like it. I like to be able to pick from different coffees every morning and not be wasting coffee because I can’t drink a whole pot by myself-- a standard coffee pot is convenient for late night study parties (something I’ve done ONCE), but in the morning when you wake up 15 minutes before class it’s not convenient to wait for the pot to brew and then have a whole pot you have to throw out because you cant drink the whole thing on your way out the door. Not saying you need a keurig, but a one-cup maker is definitely worth considering. There are more economical options than the keurig.

I am pretty sure my son has never even opened up the second set of sheets for his bed…But then again, he is a typical guy!

Reminder: when your student comes home for spring break, encourage them to bring anything that’s still not opened or rarely used. No sense paying for summer storage for things they don’t need.

Has anyone had a student use a college laundrey service or linen service?

Topping for the '11s.

Thanks MissyPie…I want to peruse the thread before we over-do the college shopping.

We are flying to take kiddo to school–so now I need to also figure out which stores allow pickup at another locale…
Anyone know? Target, Walmart, ??

Bed bath and beyond allows pick up at another location

Too many clothes! D took way too many and I kept shipping stuff before we realized most just did not work at college. I’m sure she has 50 pairs of shoes (her dorm has huge walk-in closets) and over 100 shirts…plus all the accoutrements! She will be putting much of her wardrobe in a charity donation bin so we don’t have to store it there for the summer. She’s a trained barista and took her espresso machine and lots of coffees/syrups etc but guess what? There’s a Starbucks on every corner and no time to wait for it to cook in her room!

What did I send with my kid that was never used?

Much of the good advice I packed into her head…

Also the extra sheets.

Class of '08: his retainer!

And I think he used his laptop lock maybe once.

Bathrobe.

Laptop lock.

Extra sheets.

BedBathandBeyond does distance pickups for college kids.

There were several things that we had selected through Bed Bath and Beyond that we ended up not buying. At the BB and Beyond near D1’s school, they had all the stuff waiting in a cart, and told us we didn’t need to buy it all. By that time we had seen her suite, met the roommates, and saw that they already had 2 Brita pitchers, there was a full-length mirror in the room already, etc. so we sorted through and just bought what we needed.

At her school, they walk to the shower with towels wrapped around them-no one seems to use robes! She liked having a bath sheet, for more coverage and because it dried more quickly than a thicker bath towel. We knew that the washing machines dispensed soap, so we knew not to buy laundry soap.

D2 called very upset after she slept through her alarm one Sat. morning. She was going on a trip, leaving at 4 AM, and she didn’t want her alarm to disturb her roommate. We bought the Sonic Boom, so she could set it to shake the bed, which would wake her up but not bother her roommate. A regular alarm with loud music works great only if the roommate is on a similar schedule!

She was glad we hadn’t bought a printer. They didn’t have room for it, and the 24-hour computer center was very convenient.

We flew Southwest, and so we each could take 2 suitcases free. My husband, D2, and I only needed a carry-on, so we could have taken 8 suitcases if we had wanted to! Fortunately, she didn’t want to take a ton of stuff, so we didn’t need nearly that many.

I’m really surprised at the number of parents who thought a second set of sheets would be necessary. When I grew up, we always just washed the sheets and then put them back on the bed. Saves a lot of time having to fold (or more likely, stuff) them into a closet.

Land phones? For students in 2010-2011? You guys should be smarter than that.

2nd set of sheets is nice if they are dirty and it’s not laundry day or close to it.

I always keep a second set of sheets, because I KNOW the moment I send them home I will get sick or something and have to wash them immediately before I can go back to bed. One night I had a nosebleed at 4am and I would have had to go and wash my sheets right then if I hadn’t had a spare, the night before an exam. A set of sheets doesn’t take up enough room to not be worth keeping on hand. Murphy’s law and all.

Then again, I’d love a landline phone if we had phone service in the dorms still (sooo stressful when the cell gets lost, and I hate giving out my cell to non-intimates), and I’d die without my printer. I even have an elliptical in my room. So maybe I’m just strange!

An elliptical? You must have a tiny campus or else take the bus.

No offense, but you sound high-maintenance.

Who cares? It’s my money.
