I swear by black cohosh, 540mg 3x a day for the flushes. Fortunately the raging mood swings are over, they were a wild ride for about 19 months, but SAM-E helped with those tremendously (400mg 1x a day in the am).

Still don’t sleep that great due to covers on and off all night long, but I don’t wake in a puddle of water anymore.

Black cohosh fan here too. Haven’t needed it for awhile, but today, I think I’ll have some. Spring is here. The warmer weather is having its effect . . .

Put ice in your wine…:)!
Get a pretty fan. Sleep under a light weight personal quilt that you can throw off and on easily.
I have a nightgown that is supposed to be “temperature regulating” that I bought out of desperation at one point–I absolutely love it. It’s not the prettiest but it certainly made a huge difference and as someone said earlier was more comfortable than sleeping bare.

I have hot flashes at night but they are bearable. I am a nurse and wearing precaution gowns and being in warm rooms is miserable. I cant t ake hormones because of breast cancer. This may sound extreme, but some survivors take effexor, it is supposed to help. also heard vitamin E. I think worse than the hot flashes is the moods, like climbing out of your skin.

Hi Emeraldkity4-
I used to visit my acupuncturist…in addition to the sessions, he gave me some herbs. If memory serves me correctly…they included the black cohash-worked wonders.
It was during this time period when I seemed to redistribute my weight…making me look/feel as if I was a couple of months pregnant. It was explained that this was healthy/good…as this is where my body stored my estrogen.
Hang in there…this too will pass—and you will be soooo happy! :)

I have hot flashes and night sweats (but fortunately no mood swings), but have found no correlation between what I eat or drink and how often they occur. I tend to get mild flashes occasionally during the day, more in the evening, and then always have a major one when I first lie down at night. So mine seem related to circadian rhythms or something. I have no desire to take hormones, so I’ll just keep throwing the covers off and on!

The hormones sound great – but – is there a big downside to not taking them? I feel pretty good – over the worst of it, depression is mostly gone, and the black cohosh seems to help with the more mild hot flashy things that come and go. Feeling in fairly good shape (for me), am working out, losing a little weight (although yes it is a painfully slow process), Have a thick head of hair. Somewhat oily skin still (still breaks out sometimes . . . pfft), heart not palpitating like it was for a while there . . .

The hormone takers make it sound as if those of us who don’t go that route are doomed to a rapid decay – are we?

I do notice a correlation between feeling flashy and alcohol. So, I still imbibe, but in small doses. Also noticed a correlation between a diet cola and flashiness, so I cut back (almost eliminated, but the fizzy stuff tastes pretty good on some days) on that years ago.
