what’s CG 130?
Okay, you DO need to take way more classes to complete what colleges will want. This really is a 2-year plan, graduating in August would have totally screwed your chances.
Winter Quarter 2016:
- Preparatory Chemistry 151 => do you intend to major in STEM? If not, take Chem 100 (Chemistry for non-stem majors; fulfills what colleges want to see when you apply)
- Math 111 College Algebra=> you already took Algebra2 twice, do you need it a third time? Take Precalculus and/or Analytical Geometry. Or, at the very least, take it as Math 111H.(yes, I know, college algebra is like advanced algebra 2 and some trig, but really… you’ve already taken this class twice.) I would recommend you take Math 112, which is the equivalent of HS precalculus.
Health => is that mandatory? Didn’t you complete that requirement with “Wellness” or did it not transfer? Can you take it online via FLVS if it’s required by your HS?
CG 130 => This is a class for vocational students. It’s only worth 2 credits and it won’t transfer.if you take CG at all (and really, err… not necessary!) takeone of those 4: 144, 145, 147, or 191.
- I’d recommend you also take College French 103 complemented by 112C (together, they’re roughly equivalent to HS French 2 or 3 ie. in CA French 5th semester) - go meet with teacher on Monday
- Writing 115 = necessary to take most upper-level classes!!! Therefore, NEEDED now or you won’t be able to take most transferrable classes! Anyone with Writing 90 (which you have) is eligible for this class, so MAKE SURE you take it.
(So, Winter quarter = Chem, Math, French, English, and if you feel like it, Health or a vocational course)
Spring Quarter 2016:
Chem 221: General Chemistry 1 (if you took Chem 151 and intend to major in a Stem field) OR Art 101, 102, or 103.
Math 251 => completes the math most colleges would want to see
US Government => probably required by your HS, called PS 201
French 201 or a humanities or social science class … or nothing
AND
Honors 101: Intro to Honors -a methods class that’s only worth 2 credits (you have a 3.25 GPA, right?)
You’ll also need to take (9 to 12 classes over the 2016-2017 year)
Writing 121H and 122H: Freshman Composition for 4-year college transfer => Fall 2016, Winter 2017
Math 243: either Fall, Winter, or Spring quarter
French 201, 202 sequence to complete
One from Art 101, 102, 103 (unless you like them and have space for electives and want to take more than one!)
Either: Physics 101-102 (if you don’t intend to major in Stem but want to have a thorough background) or Physics 201, 202, 203.
History: two 100 classes, or one 100 and one 200 level OR the HUM 100, 201, 202 (honestly, the sequence seems more interesting!)
Strongly recommended: HUM 221 (Leadership development - tends to be hands-on and different from other classes) and Comm 111H: Intro to public speaking (will come in very handy once you’re “really” in collge)
CG 130 is todays careers and college survival. Basically I can’t get out of it but its only once a week and easy A.
My gpa is a 3.45. I am a stem major, I’m going into engineering. Um where to start yes I needed to take Algebra 2 twice because it didn’t transfer. What english, math, and reading we take are based on college placement tests. I passed out of reading and placed into Wr 121 with a 99. I do plan on taking that at some point but I really don’t want to overload myself. My current writing class is so much homework and tests. The problem with your plan is leaves out most my required courses and it gives me classes I don’t need for my major. It would slow down my high school graduation rate just a smidge but it would also give me a bunch of classes I don’t want or need for my major. My plan is actually a three quarter plan and has been approved.
Thank you for all your help guys. I’m meeting with a college specialist to help me decide transfer versus fhigh school applicant. I know your guy’s decision but still think even if I could get into a four year with my 4.45 I think I would not be happy unless I was in one of the countries best engineering programs. But if I did transfer theres no way to know if my engineering courses would transfer plus I can’t take any engineering courses until I get up to Vector calculus which is four levels away. Any more thoughts?
Don’t count it as a real class. But REALLY you can’t get out of it? Can’t you at least take “Managing stress” or one of those (144, 145, 147, 191), which should be of help to you at least? You said you had a 4.0, that should demonstrate you’re not anywhere near in danger of dropping out or failing out. See if you can switch counselors if the one you have won’t listen. It makes no sense to have you take a class that doesn’t apply to you at all and won’t transfer, when some CG classes could (potentially) be of use (sorta).
Anyway, you MUST take WRiting 115 (required for basically any course you want to take) and I recommend you take French 103-103C (112-112C) to complete the basic language sequence toward 4-year college admissions (you’ll need to take 201/202 for colleges like the ones you mentioned in your original post though). Add Math 112, because you’ve already taken Advanced Algebra TWICE, come on, they can’t make you take it a third time!! It’s time for you to move one to precalculus (Math 112) and either chemistry class (151 if you intend to major in STEM, 100 if you intend to major in social science or humanities).
Also, as was mentioned upthread, your local high school will have to take you back for your senior year (Fall 2016) if the CC doesn’t meet your needs.
If you take the transfer path (or apply as a frosh with transferable college credit completed while in high school), you won’t know what courses transfer until you matriculate to your transfer school, unless it has transfer credit listings for your community college. This is more likely for same-state public universities (e.g. https://adminfo.ucsadm.oregonstate.edu/prod/OSU_ADMTAM.P_tcs_splash_page ) than for other schools. You would otherwise have to try to make best guesses based on course descriptions about which courses you can take to cover the frosh/soph level courses at your transfer school.
I don’t see any harm in taking CG 130 and they make you take all the classes. I had to prove I was at least up to College Algebra. (I could have tested higher but its been awhile) before they let me get out of Math 20 aka Basic Math. If you know anyone thinking of doing an alternative program warn them against gateway to college. I’ll consider taking French because i love french. Do I really have to take Wr 115 if I’ve tested out of it and going to take Wr 121? Because my school says Wr 115 or equivalent test scores. I got the highest possible grade on the placement test and my neighbors an english teacher and everyone agrees I don’t need it.
^This student is a junior in high school who is dual enrolled after fighting and winning over leukemia last year. S/he hopes to attend a highly selective college.
The classes I recommended match what most highly selective colleges will want to see from a competitive applicant. They may not necessarily all transfer since highly selective colleges consider advanced preparation as par-for-the-course, but they’d at least provide OP with a strong, rigorous curriculum with which to apply - something the first quarter, which was solely composed of remedial classes, would absolutely not do.
I am actually wondering whether the counselor OP’s been provided isn’t used to dealing with students dropping out of HS, vs. excellent students who had to take a year off due to illness - and is thus not responding to what she needs as a dual-enrolled student aiming for a top college. This student was doing B+/A- work in advanced classes and shouldn’t have been placed in remedial classes, for instance.
MYOS1634 I completely agree with you. I’m going to talk to the director and see what I can do. I am an A student the only reason my gpa is so low is because of freshman year getting bullied at a horribly cliquey catholic school and taking three honors classes. I got all A’s when I had leukemia and have all A’s now but my gpa sucks because of freshman year. I don’t agree with this system. I’m a strong student and a fighter. I have a dream to go to a highly selective school and I feel like this program is completely screwing me over though I know my freshman year doesn’t help either. Are there any other high school diploma programs for advanced students that anyone knows of? It can be anywhere and it doesn’t need to be free.
