Foregin language

Hi, I’m a freshman in high school and I want to go to Stanford. I am currently taking spanish, but when reading documents from our guidance counseler, all of the colleges and universities in Illinois require 2 years at least of Foregin language, music or art. I am currently in our schools marching band and concert band, and gonna be a drum major. Does Standford have a requirement on foreign language? Thanks for your help!

They recommend 3 or more years of one foreign language.

But it’s not required, right?

And does music or art take this place?

No, its not required, but if its recommended, you should try to get at least 3 years to be as competitive as possible. Art and music won’t take it’s place.

I haven’t been able to find the required courses.

Thank you! I was looking in the wrong spot.

Do you think I could get in with only 1 year of Spanish?

Looks like its Rosetta stone for help.

Thanks for your help.

1 year of Spanish likely would raise a red flag and cause some deliberation amongst admission officers. You don’t want that. Also, Rosseta Stone won’t cut it.

The basic rule of thumb these days for all of the top schools in the country is 4-5 years of language, english, science, math and social studies. Language is just as important to the admission committees as math, science, english and social studies. Also they want to see you take one language for all those years, not two years of spanish, followed by two years of french. The idea being that you need to get to the advanced levels of the language, not just the intro levels

I was in a similar situation my freshman year. Schedule was very tight and I wasn’t going to be able to take all the academic stuff I wanted, fulfill my graduation / language requirements, and continue with music.

That being said, I ended up taking 3 years of spanish online for credit. Continuing with music and getting into Stanford. p.s. I was drum major. Talk to your guidance counsellor to see if your state has an online option.
