Headed out to buy Bar Keeper’s Friend and Easy Off Blue!!! Thanks! But I have another problem…after 20 years in this house, the kid’s bathroom tub needs to be refinished as some of the coating on the bottom is worn. I have been putting this off, as I have no idea how to locate someone competent to do this project and none of my friends have had this problem. Must have been an inexpensive contractor’s tub. At least it will be clean…

So glad to have found this thread! Thank you, barrons. Just this week as I was scrubbing away at my tubs and still the soap scum was staying put, I thought to myself: “I should post a question on CC; someone has to know a better way than this!” I had bought a Scumbuster a long time ago, but was not completely satisfied with the results and the nylon scrubbers got beat up quickly. I haven’t seen them in the stores for years, so I don’t even know if you can still get replacement parts.

Only thing that works for me is to use VERY fine grade sandpaper VERY carefully. I’ve never found a chemical that works well.

Re Barkeeper’s Friend–powder or liquid, or do both work as well?

Re Gel Gloss–where do you buy the stuff?

Home depot/lowes…many grocery stores…buy the liquid, not the spray…be careful about floor being slippery

Thanks, I will try that today. Still a little leary about the easy off. I would make sure the windows are open when you use it.

If your buidup of soap scum, etc is significant ,use a very fine scrubber when applying…let dry, buff off…do sections at at time, not all at once…have used it for 20+ years, nothing is even close…once again,be careful of slippery floor…

I am glad to get the tip about Barkeepers to clean the outside of All-Clad pots. Ours all have a white residue on them that I can’t get off! Thanks Classof2015!

Something tells me that you’ve had experience with that slippery floor, qdogpa…

I use the powder-version of Barkeeper’s Friend, and very gently scrub it on with a basic sponge—I use the “scrubby” side. I use just a little bit of water. The first time we cleaned the shower doors, they were so dirty that they looked like frosted glass, so we had to spend more time scubbing. I was worried that the Barkeeper’s would scratch the glass, but thankfully they turned out great.

Try CLR in the toilets if the water stains are really resistant. Wear gloves, open windows, run the fan. Rinse well. I buy it at Ace Hardware.

Lol, yes once…have used other products intermittenly, including CLR and barkeepers friend, none are as good…Because GelGloss is like a wax,the shower water ‘sheets off’ so a quick squegee after showering keeps doors looking great

I want to understand this – you first clean the glass with Barkeeper’s Friend (or something similar) and then apply the gel-gloss? Do you re-apply the gel-gloss at some interval?

Just use Gelgloss…no need for anything else

Well, rinsing a shower is pretty easy, now isn’t it? By the time the water is hot it is well rinsed. The stuff is very mild as sold. They call it “fume free” for a reason.

If you have hard water build-up in the toilet try a pumice stone. I thought it would scratch but it doesn’t . Mine is worn half away, which shows which surface is harder. I bought it at Home Depot. Ones from beauty supply may be different.
When we redid the bathroom someone told us to quit using bar soap and only use liquid shower gels. Huge improvement! We have very hard water and used to get lots of build-up. I did Rain-X the glass, which is a pain getting that oily film rubbed back off again and smells awful. Now I use Method brand daily shower cleaner after I squeegee. Just along the bottom and edges where there is still water. It’s more like a water softener and smells heavenly.

Ksm: we had a tub refinished and it was amazing. I think it was $150?? Someone came to to house and did it. We redid 30 year old bathrooms but kept the toilets and one tub. Contractor said they were way better than what is sold today. Tub looks new and one year later no issues.

KSM - Some tubs can be refinished. But I also saw a “tub liner” idea on TV, which encases your current tub.

^ We have a big spot in the tub in one or our rentals, where the top has peeled off. We got estimates from a couple of companies that do refacing. For a simple tub and surround, they wanted around $3000. Yes, three thousand.

We found several companies that will refinish the tub, the cheapest was about $500. Not a great price but way cheaper than either refacing or gutting out the bathroom.
