Most nightmarish commercial on TV now:The series of “Head On” ones where something you roll across your forehead supposedly gets rid of your headaches.
Favorite commercials on now:The series where the out of work pillagers have to take alternate jobs due to credit card interest rate changes.Special fave from the series…the camp counselor jobs they take.
Speaking of ska way back in the day…S (almost 18) has inherited an original Madness “One Step Beyond” T shirt from the first wave…now sans sleeves. What wave are they up to now?3rd or 4th?

AudioP,

Would that be “Modern Lovers”, featuring Jonathan Richman and future Talking Heads and Cars members? Would the song in question be “Roadrunner”?

I knew you’d get it, particularly with its Boston themes. An overlooked classic.

cathymee,

I had that same tee shirt. Sadly Madness’ “Our House” is used in a Maxwell House commercial. Then again, they never did take themselves too seriously.

First Ska wave was the early 60s, when the music was adopted by the Mods. Round two was late 70s. The next round was in the late 80s with the Toasters, Mighty Mighty Bosstone and early No Doubt, etc. So we must be on at least wave four now.

Boston. 1979. What local band had a hit with a parody of a well known Talking Heads song? What was the song called?

Hint: First word in the band’s name is “The”

I started college in 1978. This was such an exciting time musically in Boston. Radio airplay was not regimented like today. To think just before I got there, I was listening to Styx, Kansas, Foreigner, ELP, ELO and Blue Oyster Cult…

This internet thing is amazing, ain’t it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quV4RmSQJcU

(I remembered the song, but not the group).

OK, I’m back. I can stop this whenever I want. Really. I can.

GOOD GET, M&S!!! Ellen Foley had more talent in her little finger than practically any diva I can think of. She epitomizes for me the spirit of some of these incredibly talented folks who spend their whole lives chasing the dream. [* OK, today I’ll record an album with David Bowie’s lads…OK, now I think I’ll get a lead role in a Broadway musical…OK, that’s done, maybe I should try acting in a movie–“Fatal Attraction”–yeah, that’ll work…OK, now TV…*] Talk about someone who could suck every bit of oxygen out of a room without even trying. But that voice, that voice. It’s really hard for me to understand why she’s not the most famous singer on the planet. But then, I just saw Graham Parker singing in someone’s living room last week. Life is strange. I’m stumped on the Heads parody…1978 was the year I left Boston, young fella.

[Screaming with laughter]
I never saw/heard that before, thanks guys.

Video is worth it for the fashions alone.

I find it interesting how well some of the artists from that era have matured artistically. I have recent work from Graham Parker, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello and Paul Weller that I enjoy immensely.

What I find fascinating is the connectivity among all these people. Aside from the Beatles, was there any other group in history that had the impact of the Velvet Underground and that whole CBGBs cadre? I don’t think so. The linkage is amazing.

Put this on your holiday gift list

I agree driver…remember most never even heard of rap until ‘Rapture’…

For all of you who still listened to music in the '80s…

freephotosandvideos.com;

awesome Motherdear. Playing Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams” at this very moment! Thanks! :-)

(But what’s up with the weird advertising?)

I’m sure you’ve heard the legend that less than 100 people bought the first Velvets album when it was originally issued…but every one of them became rock musicians.

Someone who knows of my schizophrenic love for cutting-edge rock music and early 70s paradise-by-the-dashboard-lights AM pop tunes sent me this. I think I would file this under “almost too cool to be possible.” The coolest thing I’ve heard since Audiophile turned me on to Matthew Sweet’s soundcheck cover of “Do Ya?”

As my daughter would say: “How is it possible for the Red Hot Chili Peppers to be so wonderful?” Watch how much fun they’re having with this–perhaps the greatest one-hit-wonder of all time.

Wonder if I could talk Flea into doing “My Maria.”

Got this from a peer to peer site. Dare you to just pick one…

For me: Spirit in the Sky, Gary Glitter and Groove is in the Heart.
Oddly left out: “The Night Chicago Died”, “Seasons in the Sun” and “Billy Don’t be a Hero”

This is so much cooler than talking about Foley.

I liked talking about Ellen Foley :)

Wow, 4NonBlondes. Hadn’t thought about that great tune in years.
I preferred the original Slade version of Cum on Feel the Noise.

The dueling Foleys may have different ideas about Paradise by the Dashboard Light :)
