As emeraldkity says it is Title 1 money that has been set aside due to NCLB. I didn’t know that the tutoring can’t be done by the schools teachers but that explains why the use of outside companies. If the money isn’t used by a certain date it is lost.
The kids at this school are poor. I would say most of the kids at this school qualify for free lunch. Most of the parents do not speak english as their primary language. I really don’t think that it’s transportation as an issue. I think the school has done it’s job trying to reach the parents. The school is not large. Many kids have already transferred out leaving behind the weakest students or the students whose parents are the least comfortable questioning the system.
I just still find it sad that the kids aren’t taking advantage of the services. Most of these kids read way below grade level so we aren’t talking tutoring in individual subjects but in something so basic that would have a huge impact on their lives.
I have spent way more money then I could even begin to count on tutoring for my kids. If I took in to account whether they wanted to go or not I would be rich. I tell my kids there are some things in life that are not a choice.
